The uses for such a derivative can include removing caffeine from a subject, improving sleep, treating insomnia, treating caffeine toxicity, treating caffeine addiction and withdrawal symptoms, and the like. Caffeine is just one example of a substrate that can be removed using the derivatives taught herein, and other examples, including theophylline, are provided herein.
