Following my recommendations for restructuring of the Alexandria VA Healthcare System's Non-VA Healthcare program (Fee Office), I utilized a managed care approach in developing a Consult Management unit that received consults, approved Fee/Non-VA care utilizing the Code of Federal Regulations to determine eligiblity, appropriated funds, scheduled care/diagnostics, followed up and received/documented results of care. This method provided complete oversight of monies appropriated for Non-VA care and ensured it was utilized correctly. It also maintained a closed system in which one unit could follow the vet's care from initiation to completion. The implementation of this managed care approach saved the facility more than $2.5 million dollars during the 1st quarter. I received a National Award for Best Practice within VA. I was chosen to present my ideas to the National VA Deptuty UnderSecretary of Health as well as the Nation's Regional VA Directors. The Undersecretary suggested and recommended implementation throughout the VA Healthcare System. This program is currently in its final stages of implementation throughout the US VA facilities.
