Systems And Methods For Under-Frequency Blackout Protection

US Patent:
2012005, Mar 1, 2012
Filed:
Aug 1, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/195227
Inventors:
Scott M. Manson - Moscow ID, US
International Classification:
G06F 1/28, G06F 19/00, G01R 21/06
US Classification:
700293, 702 60
Abstract:
A system for managing an electric power delivery system is disclosed that includes a set of remote intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and a central IED. The remote IEDs may be configured to obtain information related to operating frequencies and power consumption levels loads included in the electric power delivery system. The central IED may communicate with the remote IEDs to determine which loads are associated with a sub-grid of the electric power delivery system and whether to disconnected certain loads. Based on this determination, the central IED may direct the remote IEDs to disconnect loads from the electric power delivery system.

Systems And Methods For Blackout Protection

US Patent:
2013001, Jan 17, 2013
Filed:
Aug 16, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/587068
Inventors:
Scott M. Manson - Moscow ID, US
Assignee:
SCHWEITZER ENGINEERING LABORATORIES, INC. - Pullman WA
International Classification:
G06F 1/26
US Classification:
700297
Abstract:
A system for managing an electric power delivery system is disclosed that includes a set of remote intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and a central IED. The remote IEDs may be configured to obtain information related to rotor angles, operating frequencies, rate of change of frequency, rotating inertia, and power consumption levels of loads and generators included in the electric power delivery system. The central IED may communicate with the remote IEDs to determine which loads and generators are associated with a sub-grid of the electric power delivery system and whether to disconnected certain loads or generators. Based on this determination, the central IED may direct the remote IEDs to disconnect loads or generators from the electric power delivery system, or to rapidly increase or decrease generator output as appropriate.

Systems And Methods For Protection Of Components In Electrical Power Delivery Systems

US Patent:
2012006, Mar 15, 2012
Filed:
Sep 15, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/882521
Inventors:
Saurabh B. Shah - Pullman WA, US
Kamal Garg - Pullman WA, US
Scott M. Manson - Moscow ID, US
International Classification:
H02H 7/00
US Classification:
361 20
Abstract:
Various embodiments disclosed herein provide protection to monitored equipment at both a local level and a system level, in order to offer more comprehensive protection. In one particular embodiment, the protected equipment may include one or more generators. The protection system may utilize time-synchronized data in order to analyze data provided by systems having disparate sampling rates, that are monitored by different equipment, and/or equipment that is geographically separated. Various embodiments may be configured to utilize a variety of sampling rates.
