A luminaire to be carried by a lighting fixture. The luminaire may include a housing, a primary optic disposed within the housing having a reflective inner surface defining an optical chamber, a light source, and a heat sink defining an aperture through which light may propagate. The light source may include a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The luminaire may further include a secondary optic positioned adjacent to the light source that may collimate and/or refract light emitted by the light source, and may form a seal between the light source and the optical chamber. The luminaire may further include a color conversion layer configured to change the color of light emitted by the light source.

Reflector System For Lighting Device

Reflector System For Lighting Device

US Patent:
8529102, Sep 10, 2013
Filed:
Apr 6, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/418796
Inventors:
Paul Kenneth Pickard - Morrisville NC, US
Ryan Kelley - Denver CO, US
Assignee:
Cree, Inc. - Durham NC
International Classification:
F21V 7/00
US Classification:
362298, 362231, 362346, 36231102, 362348
Abstract:
A reflector system for a lighting device. The system uses two reflective surfaces to redirect the light before it is emitted. The light source/sources are disposed at the base of a secondary reflector. The first reflective surface is provided by a primary reflector which is arranged proximate to the source/sources. The primary reflector initially redirects, and in some cases diffuses, light from the sources such that the different wavelengths of light are mixed as they are redirected toward the secondary reflector. The secondary reflector functions primarily to shape the light into a desired output beam. The primary and secondary reflectors may be specular or diffuse and may comprise faceted surfaces. The reflector arrangement allows the source to be placed at the base of the secondary reflector where it may be thermally coupled to a housing or another structure to provide an outlet for heat generated by the sources.

Luminaire With Prismatic Optic

Luminaire With Prismatic Optic

US Patent:
2013029, Nov 7, 2013
Filed:
Jan 11, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/739054
Inventors:
Ryan Kelley - Denver CO, US
Rick LeClair - Melbourne FL, US
Assignee:
LIGHTING SCIENCE GROUP CORPORATION - Satellite Beach FL
International Classification:
F21V 5/02, F21V 7/00, F21V 29/00
US Classification:
362235, 36231101, 362294, 362309
Abstract:
A luminaire with a prismatic optic permits the nearly uniform distribution of light about the luminaire. The prismatic optic permits the use of directional light sources, such as light emitting diodes, while maintaining the uniform light distribution. When light emitting diodes are used, the luminaire further includes a heat sink to maintain a desirable operational temperature without negatively affecting the light distribution properties of the luminaire.
