Dec 14, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/956356
Inventors:
Peter T Barrett - San Francisco CA, US
Ronald A Morris - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
H04N 7/26
US Classification:
386293, 386291, 386296, 386298, 386299, 705 146, 705 1449, 705 1453, 705 1455, 705 267, 705300, 380211, 725 46
Abstract:
Recorded programs ranked based on social networks is described. In embodiment(s), a content distributor maintains recorded on-demand assets that can be requested by client devices to render as television media content for viewing. For a Network Digital Video Recording (nDVR) system, the recorded on-demand assets are recorded when initially distributed to the client devices as scheduled television media content. The content distributor can form a social network of members based on association(s) of viewers that correspond to one or more of the client devices, and can determine recommended on-demand assets from different ones of the recorded on-demand assets for the members of the social network. The content distributor can then communicate a recommended on-demand asset to a client device that corresponds to a member of the social network where the recommended on-demand asset is communicated for viewing without receiving a viewer selection of the recommended on-demand asset.

State-Sensitive Navigation Aid

US Patent:
7427941, Sep 23, 2008
Filed:
Jul 1, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/173278
Inventors:
Michael A. Cleron - Menlo Park CA, US
Jeffrey D. Yaksick - Sunnyvale CA, US
Ronald A. Morris - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G08C 19/12
US Classification:
341176, 345158, 725 52, 715810
Abstract:
Navigation logic and related methods are described for assisting a user in using a remote control (RC) device. The navigation logic determines a current state of a user's interaction with an application, and then determines the keys of the RC device that are relevant to the determined state. The navigation logic then displays a representation of the relevant keys on a user interface presentation of a presentation device. The representation resembles a physical layout of associated physical keys on the RC device. To assist the user in focusing on the relevant keys, the representation de-emphasizes other input mechanisms of the RC device that do not have a bearing on the user's current interaction with the application. One exemplary way of de-emphasizing these other keys is to entirely omit these keys from the representation.

Continuous Selection Graphs

US Patent:
7765571, Jul 27, 2010
Filed:
Jun 14, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/818490
Inventors:
Ronald A. Morris - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
H04N 5/445, G06F 3/00, G06F 13/00

Abstract:
Continuous selection graphs are described. In embodiment(s), a continuous selection graph can be displayed that includes a similarity continuum to indicate media content that is progressively similar. The continuous selection graph can also include an axis of identifying criteria for the media content by which to associate the media content along the similarity continuum. Similar media content that is associated with the identifying criteria can be determined, and selectable indicators of the similar media content can be displayed to indicate a relationship between the identifying criteria and the similar media content along the similarity continuum.

Recommendation From Stochastic Analysis

US Patent:
2009006, Mar 5, 2009
Filed:
Aug 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/897498
Inventors:
Ronald A. Morris - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 3/00
US Classification:
725 46
Abstract:
Recommendations from stochastic analysis is described. In embodiment(s), a media content distributor can receive a request for movie recommendations from a viewer via a television client device. The content distributor can then provide various movie selection choices where each choice includes two movies having disparate identifying criteria. The identifying criteria can include any combination of a category of a movie, an attribute of the movie, or an aspect of the movie. The content distributor can receive viewer selections of one movie from each of the movie selection choices and then generate the movie recommendations for the viewer. The movie recommendation can be generated by stochastic analysis of the identifying criteria associated with the viewer selected movies from each of the movie selection choices.

Bucket-Based Searching

US Patent:
7548906, Jun 16, 2009
Filed:
Jun 23, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/426209
Inventors:
Ronald A. Morris - San Francisco CA, US
Charles J. Migos - San Francisco CA, US
Yi Linda Chan - San Jose CA, US
David H. Sloo - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 7/00
US Classification:
707 3
Abstract:
An item discovery module (IDM) is described that allows a user to find one or more desired items within a store of candidate items. In operation, the user enters a search selection, upon which the IDM determines a collection of matching items. The IDM groups the matching items into one or more buckets, each bucket including one or more items. The IDM then selects representative items for the respective buckets and presents the representative items to the user. The representative items assist the user in converging on the one or more desired items. Namely, the user may enter another search selection which targets an identified bucket, upon which the above-described procedure is repeated.
