Storage Media With Benchmark Representative Of Data Originally Stored Thereon

US Patent:
6718446, Apr 6, 2004
Filed:
Jun 5, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/588149
Inventors:
Eric Ryon Peters - Roy UT
Robert L. Short - Niwot CO
Chad Adams - Roy UT
Ronald F. Hales - Riverdale UT
Assignee:
Iomega Corporation - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G06F 1216
US Classification:
711162, 711141, 707202, 707204, 714 54
Abstract:
Data on a master is read into a master image file, and the master image file is manipulated to include a benchmark comprising tracking and verification information tied to at least a portion of the master image file. Thus, a copied-to storage media as copied from the master image file also includes such benchmark, a data alteration of the master image file causes a mis-match with regard to the benchmark in such master image file, and a data alteration of the copied-to storage media also causes a mis-match with regard to the benchmark in such storage media as copied from such master image file. The benchmark may include a part identifier and a security identifier.

System And Method For Measuring The Density Of Fibers Projecting From A Planar Surface

US Patent:
6055059, Apr 25, 2000
Filed:
Nov 2, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/184544
Inventors:
Brian Charles Merx - Roy UT
Richard Tolan Brown - Roy UT
Robert Hales Lundgreen - Roy UT
Ronald Frank Hales - Riverdale UT
Assignee:
Iomega Corporation - Roy UT
International Classification:
G01N 2184
US Classification:
356430
Abstract:
A system and a method for determining the density in which fibers are disposed along a planar surface employs a source of irradiance and a detector of irradiance in optical communication. A planar surface is positioned slightly below the optical path between the source and the detector. The fibers disposed along the planar surface interrupt the transmission of irradiance between the source and the detector. This interruption causes a decrease in the quantity of irradiance reaching the detector, resulting in a corresponding drop in the detector's output voltage. The density in which fibers are disposed along the planar surface can be determined by comparing the detector's voltage output with a pre-established baseline relating voltage output to fiber density.

Method And System For Providing Secure Digital Sound Recording

US Patent:
2002019, Dec 26, 2002
Filed:
Jun 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/888001
Inventors:
Shawn Isaacson - Roy UT, US
Richard Brown - Roy UT, US
Ronald Hales - Riverdale UT, US
International Classification:
H04N007/167
US Classification:
380/231000, 705/054000, 380/201000, 705/057000
Abstract:
A method and system are provided wherein captured digital data from an application rendering digital data on a client computing device or downloaded thereto is converted into a secure (encrypted) digital format. Then, certain digital rights are applied to the digital data, such as the right to play and listen to the file x number of times, for a set period of time, unlimited play rights on that computer, the right to transfer to a portable device, or other like license limitations. This technique can build on existing architectures such as a system using the Total Recorder product. Thus, in connection with storage of captured digital data, the present invention converts the file into a secure format and applies DRM rules to the file depending upon the nature of the content and/or default rules for downloading or recording content. One may purchase additional rights to the digital data as well.

Shutter Liner For A Disk Cartridge

US Patent:
6256168, Jul 3, 2001
Filed:
Oct 30, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/183291
Inventors:
Ronald F. Hales - Riverdale UT
Richard Tolan Brown - Roy UT
Brian Schick - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Iomega Corporation - Roy UT
International Classification:
G11B 23033
US Classification:
360133
Abstract:
A disk cartridge has a rotary inner shell, or shutter, to permit access to a data-storage medium disposed within the shell. A driving-access opening is located in a bottom surface of the cartridge's outer shell to allow a drive mechanism to rotate the storage medium. A portion of the inner shell projects into the driving-access opening to aid in the rotational alignment of the shell. The outer shell has a wedge-shaped disk-access opening. The inner shell rotates over a predefined arc to expose the data storage medium via the disk-access opening. A liner is disposed between the inner and outer shells to reduce sliding friction between the shells.

Overhanging Liner For A Disk-Cartridge Shutter

US Patent:
6021031, Feb 1, 2000
Filed:
Oct 30, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/183290
Inventors:
Ronald F. Hales - Riverdale UT
Richard T. Brown - Roy UT
Brian Schick - San Diego CA
Robert H. Lundgreen - Roy UT
Assignee:
Iomega Corporation - Roy UT
International Classification:
G11B 23033
US Classification:
360133
Abstract:
A data-storage cartridge has a rotary inner shell, or shutter, to selectively permit access to a data-storage disk disposed within the shell. The shutter is equipped with a wedge-shaped opening through which access to the data-storage disk is attained. A fabric liner is affixed to the inner surface of the shutter to isolate the disk from direct contact with the shutter. The ends of the liner extend beyond, i. e. , overhang, the edges of the shutter which form the disk-access opening, thereby preventing direct contact between the data-storage disk and the edges.
