Lensed And Striped Flat Panel Photobioreactors

US Patent:
2013023, Sep 5, 2013
Filed:
Aug 30, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/599138
Inventors:
RONALD SURYO - Fairfax VA, US
JOHN T. WYATT - Alexandria VA, US
Assignee:
EXXONMOBIL RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING COMPANY - Annandale NJ
International Classification:
C12M 1/00
US Classification:
4352571, 4352921
Abstract:
The surface or surfaces of the walls of a closed photobioreactor are modified to generate light and dark regions. For example, the interior and/or exterior surfaces of the walls of the photobioreactor's chamber can be modified such that they form or incorporate convex and/or concave lenses. The concavity and/or convexity of the lenses redirect incident light rays so that the light is focused to specific points within the chamber, creating multiple light and dark regions within the photobioreactor. Alternatively, or in addition, a pattern of opaque material can be utilized on the walls of the chamber to generate light and dark regions. The number, location and shape of the light and dark regions are controlled by the design of the concavities and/or convexities and/or opaque patterns incorporated into the various surfaces of the photobioreactor.

Piping Internals To Control Gas-Liquid Flow Split

US Patent:
2012015, Jun 21, 2012
Filed:
Dec 14, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/325194
Inventors:
Ronald Suryo - Fairfax VA, US
Anastasios Skoulidas - Bristow VA, US
David L. Vannauker - Kingwood TX, US
Assignee:
EXXONMOBIL RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING COMPANY - Annandale NJ
International Classification:
F15D 1/00
US Classification:
137 1, 137861
Abstract:
Structures and methods are provided for improving the distribution of fluids between exit flows from a split junction, such as a tee-junction. The improved distribution of fluids can result in a more equal distribution of both gases and liquids between the exits of the junction. The improvement can be provided by using a baffle structure, such as an annular baffle structure, upstream from the desired junction. The baffle structures can improve the distribution of fluids in the exit flows in various manners, such as by reducing the amount of vorticity or “swirl” in the input flow to the junction or by reducing the separation of gases from liquids within a flow.

Circulating Fluid Bed Reactor With Improved Circulation

US Patent:
2011020, Aug 25, 2011
Filed:
Feb 17, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/029608
Inventors:
E. Nicholas JONES - Centreville VA, US
Alvin U. CHEN - Reston VA, US
Clay R. SUTTON - Redondo Beach CA, US
Timothy M. HEALY - Centreville VA, US
Ronald SURYO - Fairfax VA, US
Len LAMPERT - Calgary, CA
Jonathan MILLER - Washington DC, US
Assignee:
EXXONMOBIL RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING COMPANY - Annandale NJ
International Classification:
B01J 8/18
US Classification:
422145, 422139
Abstract:
A circulating fluid bed reactor such as that used in fluid coking processes has a circular dense bed reaction section above the reactor base where the fluidizing gas is injected and a plurality of frusto-conical baffles in the dense bed reaction section, each of which depends downwardly and radially inwards from the reactor wall to a lower, inner edge defining a central aperture. The baffles are preferably provided with downcomers which permit downward flow of solids and upward flow of gas through the baffles.
