Aug 28, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/012279
Inventors:
Ronald M. Carn - Redding CA, US
International Classification:
A61G 13/12
US Classification:
5624
Abstract:
The improved positioning device, for use in hip, pelvis or bariatric surgery, securely and safely supports a morbidly obese patient lying in the lateral decubitus position at one side of an operating table so the surgeon may stand close to the anterior side of the patient. The support device includes a double-ended bracket having a pair of oppositely positioned padded end portions secured to an angular bracket post adapted to securely mount to an operating table via a question mark-shaped bracket. The angular bracket arm vertically adjusts to support the patient on one side, with the padded end portions applied to bony prominences such as the symphysis pubis and the lower side anterior superior iliac spine. The support device is used in combination with a posterior pelvic support plate, and a pair of anterior-posterior chest support plates to retain the patient in a secure and stable manner during surgery.

US Patent:
6652771, Nov 25, 2003
Filed:
Feb 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/074749
Inventors:
Ronald M. Carn - Redding CA 96003
International Classification:
C09K 514
US Classification:
252 70, 62 4, 62530, 16510412, 16510415, 16510417, 165920, 607 96, 607114
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a powdered mix of a phase change material blend. The blend includes a polar phase change material bound substantially to at least one surface of a clay matrix having a surface charge, wherein the blend is present in a powdered form at temperatures above and below the phase change temperature of the polar phase change material. The present invention also relates to a method of making the powdered mix of a phase change material blend and a therapy pack including the powdered mix of a phase change material blend.

Alignment Fixture For X-Ray Images

US Patent:
8235594, Aug 7, 2012
Filed:
Oct 18, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/906394
Inventors:
Ronald M. Carn - Redding CA, US
International Classification:
A61B 6/08
US Classification:
378205, 378163
Abstract:
An alignment fixture for taking X-ray images of a patient, such as an image of the patient's hip region preparatory to hip arthroplasty. The alignment fixture comprises multiple support legs for resting on the patient at known positions, such as upon known bony prominences, in combination with aiming marks used for anatomically aligning the patent's pelvis under an X-ray beam. A ruled grid plate on the fixture is adjustably positioned between an image beam source and the patient, as a function of patient thickness in the pelvic region, so that a ruled grid overlays the anatomical region of interest and exhibits an apparent parallax image magnification corresponding with the parallax image magnification of a centerline of the anatomical region, such as the hip joint. X-ray images taken by use of the alignment fixture can be viewed and/or scaled to select a properly sized prosthesis for the specific patient.

Intramedullary Bone Plug

US Patent:
5861043, Jan 19, 1999
Filed:
Aug 14, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/912953
Inventors:
Ronald M. Carn - Redding CA
Assignee:
Sunmed Inc. - Redding CA
International Classification:
A61F 228
US Classification:
623 16
Abstract:
A bone plug is provided for insertion into the medullary canal of a patient bone during orthopedic surgery, wherein the bone plug restricts or prevents passage of bone cement introduced under pressure into the medullary canal. The bone plug includes a generally cylindrical member formed from a biocompatible material such as polyethylene and having sets of distal and proximal fins. The distal fins are defined by a spiral thread set at an angle to extend distally, to bend to accommodate the shape of the medullary canal and thereby anchor the bone plug by biting into patient bone, whereas the proximal fins flex during plug insertion to extend proximally and thereby seal against bypass flow of bone cement past the bone plug. An insertion tool is also disclosed, for use in placing the bone plug during a surgical procedure, such as hip arthroplasty.
