Electronic Ballast And Method For Arc Straightening

US Patent:
6522089, Feb 18, 2003
Filed:
Oct 23, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/002916
Inventors:
Canh Cong Duong - Salem MA
Ronald Fiorello - Tewksbury MA
Assignee:
Orsam Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H05B 3702
US Classification:
315308, 315291, 315307
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling a lamp ballast having a DC-DC converter with first and second MOSFETs acting as switches alternately connecting a DC power source to a power transformer, with an output of the power transformer being connected to a DC-AC inverter driving the lamp. The first and second MOSFETs in the DC-DC converter are alternately opened and closed at a frequency that is swept repeatedly between predetermined minimum and maximum frequencies. A microcontroller-based feedback element determines instantaneous power consumption by the lamp and controls the MOSFETs through a pulse width modulator to continuously adjust a duty cycle of signals driving gates of the MOSFETs to maintain a desired level of power consumption.

Method And Circuit For Regulating Power In A High Intensity Discharge Lamp

US Patent:
7187136, Mar 6, 2007
Filed:
Oct 25, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/972810
Inventors:
Ronald M. Fiorello - Tewksbury MA, US
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania, Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H05B 37/00
US Classification:
315224, 315307
Abstract:
A circuit for controlling power to a high intensity discharge lamp is disclosed. The circuit according to one embodiment of the invention comprises a rectifier circuit coupled to receive an alternating current line voltage, and a boost/flyback converter coupled to the rectifier circuit which outputs a regulated DC bus voltage. A power control circuit also couples a feedback signal to the boost/flyback converter to regulate the power output of the boost/flyback converter. A method of controlling power to a high intensity discharge lamp is also disclosed. The method comprises steps of generating a DC voltage for the high intensity discharge lamp by way of a boost/flyback converter; monitoring the DC voltage and the current generated in the boost/flyback converter; and modifying the power output by the boost/flyback converter to regulate power based upon the voltage and the current.

Method And Circuit For Igniting And Powering A High Intensity Discharge Lamp

US Patent:
2006008, Apr 27, 2006
Filed:
Oct 25, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/972611
Inventors:
Ronald Fiorello - Tewksbury MA, US
International Classification:
H05B 37/02
US Classification:
315212000
Abstract:
A circuit for igniting a high intensity discharge lamp is disclosed. The circuit comprises a rectifier circuit coupled to receive an alternating current line voltage. A flyback converter coupled to the rectifier circuit has an inductor comprising a primary inductive winding and a secondary inductive winding. Finally, an open circuit voltage circuit coupled to the secondary inductive winding couples a supplement inductive winding to the secondary winding during ignition. A method of igniting a high intensity discharge lamp is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of generating a DC voltage for the high intensity discharge lamp by way of a flyback converter; providing an inductive winding comprising a primary inductive winding and a secondary inductive winding in the flyback converter; and coupling a supplement inductive winding couple to the secondary winding during ignition.
