Line Periodically Poled Linbo.sub.3 (Ppln) Optical Parametric Oscillator (Opo-Dfg-Opo) With Common Doubly Resonant Cavity

US Patent:
6101023, Aug 8, 2000
Filed:
Sep 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/151464
Inventors:
Ronald K. Meyer - Chicago IL
Mohan Vaidyanathan - Algonguin IL
William Pekny - Schaumberg IL
Gerald P. Griffith - Western Springs IL
Peter H. Mui - Fairfax VA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G02F 139
US Classification:
359330
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to the field of optical devices and particularly to embodiments of a three-stage PPLN optical parametric oscillator/difference-frequency generator configuration. The present invention allows simultaneous generation of three wavelengths in efficient use of the pump signal. The structure of the first embodiment of the present invention comprises a first PPLN element having first and second grating regions, and a second PPLN element having its own grating period. An input coupler is positioned at the input and exit ends of a resonator cavity and the first PPLN element is positioned between the input coupler and the second PPLN element. A second embodiment of the present invention includes a single PPLN element having three separate grating regions. The single PPLN element is positioned between input and output coupler mirrors. A third embodiment of the present invention includes a single PPLN element having three grating regions.

Optical Parametric Oscillator With Monolithic Dual Ppln Elements With Intrinsic Mirrors

US Patent:
6167067, Dec 26, 2000
Filed:
Apr 3, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/055104
Inventors:
Ronald Kenneth Meyer - Chicago IL
Michael L. Marable - Tinley Park IL
Gerald P. Griffith - Western Springs IL
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H01S 3108
US Classification:
372 21
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to an apparatus that increases the conversion efficiency of optical parametric oscillators and also reduces overall system size and susceptibility to vibration. The first embodiment of the present invention incorporates a PPLN OPO architecture which includes mirrored coatings on the entry surface area and exit surface area of a monolithic nonlinear optical medium. The coatings act as mirrors, however, the mirrors are actually affixed to the PPLN element. In the first embodiment of the present invention, the PPLN element is a dual grated element. The second embodiment of the present invention uses a single grated PPLN element.

Quadruple Grating Period Ppln Optical Parametric Oscillator Difference Frequency Generator With Common Doubly Resonant Cavity

US Patent:
6016214, Jan 18, 2000
Filed:
Sep 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/151539
Inventors:
Ronald K. Meyer - Chicago IL
Mohan Vaidyanathan - Algonguin IL
William Pekny - Schaumberg IL
Gerald P. Griffith - Western Springs IL
Peter H. Mui - Fairfax VA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G02B 2600, G02F 135
US Classification:
359237
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to the field of optical devices and particularly to embodiments of a four-stage PPLN optical parametric oscillator/difference-frequency generator configuration. The present invention allows simultaneously and colinear generation of four wavelengths in efficient use of the pump signal. A first embodiment comprises a singly resonant cavity having an internal monolithic non-linear optical medium disposed in the cavity. The cavity is bounded by an input mirror and an output mirror. The monolithic non-linear optical medium is divided into four regions each having its own grating period. A second embodiment of the present invention comprises a monolithic non-linear optical medium divided into four separate regions. The entrance facet and exit facet of the monolithic non-linear optical medium includes a coating which acts as the cavity mirrors.

Integrated Narrow-Line Tunable Optical Parametric Oscillator

US Patent:
7075955, Jul 11, 2006
Filed:
Feb 17, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/780519
Inventors:
James M. Cicchiello - Cary IL, US
Ronald K. Meyer - Chicago IL, US
Gerald Griffith - Western Springs IL, US
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H01S 3/10
US Classification:
372 21, 372 92, 372 98
Abstract:
An integrated optical parametric oscillator, having an optical parametric oscillation region to convert a pump source into a signal beam and an idler beam, and a fine-steering region to adjust optical path of the signal beam in order to finely select a required wavelength component of the signal beam. The optical parametric oscillator is contoured with a plurality of exterior planes with specific reflective characteristics to form a resonator of the idler beam while reflecting and diffracting the signal beam with a desired wavelength.
