Automated Polysomnographic Assessment For Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder

US Patent:
7996076, Aug 9, 2011
Filed:
Apr 2, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/080440
Inventors:
Joseph W. Burns - Ann Arbor MI, US
Ronald D. Chervin - Ann Arbor MI, US
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor MI
Michigan Technological University - Houghton MI
International Classification:
A61B 5/00, A61B 5/04
US Classification:
600546, 600300, 600544, 600545
Abstract:
Methods and systems for diagnosing or assessing rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Muscle tone or activity variance during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep intervals of a polysomnogram are compared. A threshold based on the NREM data is used to identify a subject-specific threshold for abnormality in the REM variance. A metric that includes the percentage of REM variance exceeding the threshold relates to RBD.

System And Method For Analysis Of Respiratory Cycle-Related Eeg Changes In Sleep-Disordered Breathing

US Patent:
2004025, Dec 16, 2004
Filed:
Jun 14, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/866931
Inventors:
Ronald Chervin - Ann Arbor MI, US
Joseph Burns - Ann Arbor MI, US
Nikolas Subotic - Ann Arbor MI, US
Christopher Roussi - Kalamazoo MI, US
International Classification:
A61B005/04
US Classification:
600/544000
Abstract:
A system and method for determining respiratory cycle-related EEG changes (RCREC) for a subject with sleep-disordered breathing are provided. The method includes receiving an EEG signal from the subject using at least one sensor, and defining at least two respiratory cycle segments within each respiratory cycle. The method further includes determining an EEG power of the EEG signal during each of the at least two respiratory cycle segments, and determining RCREC by calculating a difference between a maximum EEG segment power and a minimum EEG segment power.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Device

US Patent:
2013013, Jun 6, 2013
Filed:
Dec 10, 2010
Appl. No.:
13/514616
Inventors:
Ronald D. Chervin - Ann Arbor MI, US
Katya B. Christenson - Sioux Falls SD, US
Steven M. Fannon - Novi MI, US
Joseph W. Jacquemin - Panama City Beach FL, US
Davina A. Widjaja - Jakarta Utara, ID
Kathleen Sienko - Ann Arbor MI, US
Assignee:
THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
A61M 16/00, A61M 16/08, A61M 16/06, A61M 16/20
US Classification:
12820516
Abstract:
A sleep apnea treatment device that includes a first chamber, a second chamber, and an energy storage component. The first chamber receives a patient's exhaled breath, which causes the second chamber to be expanded with fresh air that is drawn in during expansion of the second chamber. Energy from the patient's exhaled breath is stored in the energy storage component and then used to expel the air in the second chamber under positive pressure into the patient's airway. The first chamber can expand during the patient's exhaled breath which causes a plate or other movable member to simultaneously expand the second chamber to thereby draw in the fresh air that is subsequently expelled to the patient using the energy in the energy storage component.
