Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Stanford, California, and his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He completed a year of surgery at Tulane University and a neurosurgical residency at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He also completed fellowships at the University of Zurich and the National Hospital in Queen Square, London. Dr. Smith was in full-time academic medicine and in private practice before joining Ochsner in 2001. He is an active medical educator and holds a clinical associate professorship at LSU School of Medicine. Dr. Smith is also active in a variety of professional memberships and medical organizations. He has held positions such as President of the Louisiana Neurosurgical Society (1995-1996) and President-Elect of the Orleans Parish Medical Society (2002-2003). Dr. Smith specializes in surgery of the brain and spine.
