Wideband Phased Array Antenna And Associated Methods

US Patent:
6512487, Jan 28, 2003
Filed:
Oct 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/703247
Inventors:
Robert Charles Taylor - Melbourne FL
Benedikt A. Munk - Columbus OH
Timothy Earl Durham - Palm Bay FL
Assignee:
Harris Corporation - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
H01Q 138
US Classification:
343795, 343797
Abstract:
A wideband phased array antenna includes an array of dipole antenna elements on a flexible substrate. Each dipole antenna element has a medial feed portion and a pair of legs extending outwardly therefrom, and adjacent legs of adjacent dipole antenna elements have respective spaced apart end portions to provide increased capacitive coupling between the adjacent dipole antenna elements. Preferably, each leg has an elongated body portion, and an enlarged width end portion connected to an end of the elongated body portion. Thus, a phased array antenna with a wide frequency bandwith and a wide scan angle is obtained by utilizing tightly packed dipole antenna elements with large mutual capacitive coupling. Conventional approaches have sought to reduce mutual coupling between dipoles, but the present invention makes use of, and increases, mutual coupling between the closely spaced dipole antenna elements to prevent grating lobes and achieve the wide bandwidth.

Patch Dipole Array Antenna And Associated Methods

US Patent:
6307510, Oct 23, 2001
Filed:
Oct 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/702712
Inventors:
Robert Charles Taylor - Melbourne FL
James J. Rawnick - Palm Bay FL
Assignee:
Harris Corporation - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
H01Q 126
US Classification:
343700MS
Abstract:
The dual polarization antenna includes a substrate having a ground plane and a dielectric layer adjacent thereto, and at least one antenna unit carried by the substrate. The antenna unit includes four adjacent antenna elements arranged in spaced apart relation from one another about a central feed position on the dielectric layer opposite the ground plane. Preferably, diagonal pairs of antenna elements define respective antenna dipoles thereby providing dual polarization. The antenna unit also includes an antenna feed structure having four coaxial feed lines, each coaxial feed line including an inner conductor and a tubular outer conductor in surrounding relation thereto. The outer conductors have parallel adjacent ends joined together about an axis and are connected to the ground plane. The ends of the outer conductors are tapered and arranged so that portions thereof adjacent the axis extend further beyond the ground plane in the dielectric layer and toward the antenna elements. The inner conductors preferably extend outwardly from ends of respective outer conductors, through the dielectric layer and are connected to respective antenna elements adjacent the central feed position.

Jan 14, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/035533
Inventors:
Robert C. Taylor - Melbourne FL, US
William F. Croswell - Melbourne FL, US
Ronald J. Hash - Rogersville TN, US
Assignee:

Dual Band Hybrid Solid/Dichroic Antenna Reflector

US Patent:
6140978, Oct 31, 2000
Filed:
Sep 8, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/392134
Inventors:
Yves Patenaude - Palm Bay FL
Timothy E. Durham - Palm Bay FL
James D. Struttmann - Indialantic FL
Robert C. Taylor - Melbourne FL
Adam Zaricki - Indialantic FL
William R. Whaley - Palm Bay FL
Jay A. Kralovec - Melbourne FL
Assignee:
Harris Corporation - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
H01Q 1502, H01Q 1900
US Classification:
343909
Abstract:
A spaceborne hybrid antenna reflector for dual frequency band illumination of common spot beam coverage regions contains an interior solid reflector region, that is adjacent at its perimeter to a ring-shaped exterior dichroic reflector region and adjoined by a common backing structure. The solid interior region is reflective to RF energy at each of first and second spaced apart frequency bands, while the exterior dichroic reflector region is reflective at the first frequency band, but non-reflective at the second frequency band. This allows the hybrid reflector to realize the same beamwidth coverage for a transmitter operating at one frequency band and a receiver operating at the other frequency band. The backing support frame at the rear side of the reflector is electrically decoupled from the exterior dichroic ring.
