Lidar-Assisted Multi-Image Matching For 3-D Model And Sensor Pose Refinement

US Patent:
2010020, Aug 12, 2010
Filed:
Sep 21, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/563894
Inventors:
Robert Taylor Pack - Logan UT, US
Paul Israelsen - North Logan UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
G06F 17/50, G06F 17/10
US Classification:
703 1, 703 2
Abstract:
A 3-D model of a subject matter may be constructed from a plurality of lidar shots and overlapping EO images of the subject matter. Each of the lidar shots may be mapped to image patches within two or more of the EO images using navigation data associated with the lidar shots and EO images. Each of the back-projected lidar points may be set as a centroid of an image patch (collection of pixels) within an EO image. With the aid of the lidar centroids, the image patches in overlapping EO images may be correlated and an image-based pixel-to-pixel coordinate association therebetween may be calculated. Using this refined pixel-to-pixel coordinate association, a 3-D model of the subject matter may be constructed and refined using photogrammetry techniques. Videogrammetry techniques, such as optical flow techniques, may be applied if a sufficient amount of EO imagery data is available.

System And Method For 3D Model Generation

US Patent:
2008011, May 15, 2008
Filed:
Nov 14, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/939663
Inventors:
Paul Israelsen - North Logan UT, US
Robert Pack - Logan UT, US
Troy Sheen - West Point UT, US
Dustin Buckthal - Salt Lake City UT, US
Assignee:
S2, INC. - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
G06K 9/00
US Classification:
382154
Abstract:
A camera including a Lidar and an optical camera captures 3D data representing scans of an object. The Lidar and optical camera may synchronously or asynchronously capture 3D data. An image is generated for each scan. The images are aligned and combined to generate a total image. Alignment of images may be based on received spatial information. The total image is processed to generated a 3D model.

3D Multispectral Lidar

US Patent:
6664529, Dec 16, 2003
Filed:
Jan 15, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/052825
Inventors:
Robert Taylor Pack - Logan UT
Frederick Brent Pack - Waipahu HI
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
H01L 2700
US Classification:
2502081, 356 401
Abstract:
A 3D MultiSpectral Lidar. The system comprises a laser transmitter light source, a laser detection assembly, optics that couple the outgoing and incoming laser signals, a digital camera assembly for collecting passive light, a position and orientation system, and processing hardware. The system provides real-time georectified three dimensional images and topography using an airborne platform. The system collects time-synchronous lidar range and image data in an optical receiver. The individual images are then mosaiced and orthorectified in real-time. The lidar range data and image data are then coupled to a position and orientation system to transform the three dimensional range images to a single geographically referenced multispectral three dimensional image.

System And Method For Rendering Of Texel Imagery

US Patent:
7940279, May 10, 2011
Filed:
Feb 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/031088
Inventors:
Robert Taylor Pack - Logan UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
G09G 5/00
US Classification:
345582
Abstract:
A point cloud data set may be pre-processed for fast and efficient rendering. The pre-processing may comprise creating an octree hierarchy from the data, generating a level of detail (LOD) representation for each octree node, simplifying the points in each node according to a simplification tolerance, and storing the data structure in a file. Textures associated with each node may be stored in a separate, compressed file, such as a texture atlas. At render time, the octree and LOD hierarchy may be traversed until a suitable LOD node is found. The associated texture data may be accessed, and the node may be rendered as a textured quadrilateral and/or a splat point primitive. In an alternative approach, multiple point cloud datasets may be merged using a global transform function. The merged dataset may be simplified using a hierarchical LOD tree. Textures may be ascribed to each LOD node.

Lidar-Assisted Stero Imager

US Patent:
2010020, Aug 12, 2010
Filed:
Feb 9, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/368057
Inventors:
Paul Israelsen - North Logan UT, US
Robert T. Pack - Logan UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
G06G 7/62
US Classification:
703 17
Abstract:
A lidar and one or more electro-optical (EO) imaging device may asynchronously acquire lidar shots and EO images. Navigation data comprising positioning, orientation, acceleration, and/or velocity information may be acquired as the lidar and EO data is captured. The lidar shots, EO images, and/or navigation data may be time stamped. The navigation and timing data may be used to associate a particular lidar shot and/or EO image with navigation data. The EO images may be captured at a higher capture rate and at a higher spatial resolution than the lidar shots. The navigation data may be used to cross correlate a lidar shot to a selected plurality of overlapping EO images. Ranging model information may be determined from EO image sequences using a stereo imaging technique. The stereo imaging technique may be seeded using the lidar shot data.

System And Method For Improving Lidar Data Fidelity Using Pixel-Aligned Lidar/Electro-Optic Data

US Patent:
7417717, Aug 26, 2008
Filed:
Oct 5, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/244212
Inventors:
Robert Taylor Pack - Logan UT, US
Scott Ezra Budge - Logan UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University - Logan UT
International Classification:
G01C 3/06
US Classification:
356 401
Abstract:
A lidar and digital camera system collect data and generate a three-dimensional image. A lidar generates a laser beam to form a lidar shot and to receive a reflected laser beam to provide range data. A digital camera includes an array of pixels to receive optical radiation and provide electro-optical data. An optical bench passes the laser beam, reflected laser beam, and optical radiation and is positioned to align each pixel to known positions within the lidar shot. Pixels are matched to form a lidar point-cloud which is used to generate an image.
