Heat Sink With Geometric Arrangement Of Led Surfaces

US Patent:
6692252, Feb 17, 2004
Filed:
Dec 17, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/024110
Inventors:
Robert R. Scott - Riverton UT
Assignee:
Ultradent Products, Inc. - South Jordan UT
International Classification:
A61C 300
US Classification:
433 29
Abstract:
A heat sink for a dental light-curing device comprises three mounting surfaces that are each configured for mounting a light source, such as an LED or LED array, which is capable of generating light suitable for curing light-curable compounds. The mounting surfaces are configured with a geometric arrangement in which one of the mounting surfaces is placed nearer to the tip of the heat sink than either of the remaining two mounting surfaces, which are placed adjacent to the first mounting surface and are spaced an equal distance away from the tip of the heat sink. This arrangement generally minimizes the heat that is generated by the LEDs at the tip of the heat sink and expedites the diffusion of heat from the LEDs.

Wide Bandwidth Led Curing Light

US Patent:
2004010, May 27, 2004
Filed:
Nov 21, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/301158
Inventors:
Robert Scott - Riverton UT, US
International Classification:
A61C003/00
US Classification:
433/029000
Abstract:
A curing light incorporates a plurality of different types of LED light sources that are configured to emit different wavelengths. In one embodiment, the different LED light sources collectively emit a broad and broad spectrum of light that emulates the spectrum of light emitted by a quartz-halogen-tungsten bulb. Accordingly, the curing light may be used to cure camphorquinone initiated products as well as adhesives and other photocurable resins that cure at a wavelength different from the wavelength used to initiate curing of products that contain camphorquinone. The curing light may be configured to allow the different LED light sources to be operated simultaneously or separately as desired. Any number of LED light sources may be utilized by the curing light. In one embodiment, the LED light sources are disposed and arranged at the distal end of the curing light in such a manner that the light can be emitted from the LED light sources in an overlapping manner.

The light integrator includes an outer wall defining a hollow reflective internal chamber, an input port through the wall, and an output port through the wall and spaced apart from the input port. Light is received by the light integrator through the input port and into the diffusely reflective internal chamber such that the received light is reflected in many directions and a plurality of times within the internal chamber before being emitted through the output port. Light exiting the output port of the light integrator is such that the intensity of any given wavelength emitted is substantially equally distributed across the entire footprint of emitted light.
