Process For Subchannel Bandwidth Allocation And Extraction By An Isdn Communications Controller

US Patent:
6215796, Apr 10, 2001
Filed:
Mar 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/820335
Inventors:
Robert Lynn Smith - Cary NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
H04L 1228
US Classification:
370493
Abstract:
A system includes a plurality of end-user devices coupled to a communications controller which is connected to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of a telecommunications network. The ISDN line has two bearer channels bandwidth and a data channel. A method of subchannel bandwidth allocation from the bearer channels is initiated by establishing, as demanded for a particular end-user device, a call connection though the telecommunications network between the communications controller and another network terminator. The controller inquires, over the data channel, whether the network terminator is a compatible communications controller. If a positive compatibility indication, the two controllers allocate to the particular end-user device a subchannel from the bandwidth of the two bearer channels, wherein the subchannel consists of bandwidth up to the full bandwidth if the particular end-user device is a data processing unit or bandwidth sufficient for a controller-encoded voice signal if the particular end-user device is a telephone. If the positive compatibility indication is not received, allocating by the communications controller to the particular end-user device one of the two bearer channels.

Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
H04L 1254
US Classification:
370437
Abstract:
A communications controller for interfacing multiple analog telephone terminals to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line connected to a telecommunications network, the ISDN line having two bearer (B) channels and a data (D) channel. The controller comprises an ISDN interface providing a physical bi-directional interface to the two B-channels and the D-channel of the ISDN line. A base logic processor, and D-channel protocols process supports a Q. 931 protocol with a central office of the telecommunications network and an X. 25-based protocol with a remote device, via the ISDN interface and D-channel over which command and response packets to and from the base logic processor with the central office or the remote device are transmitted. Multiple analog interfaces are adapted to support respective telephone terminals for passing bi-directional analog voice signals. Selectable coders/decoders (CODECs), connected to respective analog interfaces, encode the analog voice signals to digital pulse code modulation (PCM) or adaptive differential PCM (ADPCM) and decode PCM or ADPCM to analog, as selected by the base logic processor.

System For Local Voice Distribution By An Isdn Communications Controller

US Patent:
6034953, Mar 7, 2000
Filed:
Mar 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/820333
Inventors:
Robert Lynn Smith - Cary NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
H04L 1228
US Classification:
370359
Abstract:
A system for interfacing a plurality of analog telephones to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of telecommunications network is disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of line interface units connected to respective telephones and a distribution line, and a communications controller interconnects the distribution line and the ISDN line. The communications controller transmits digital data frames on the distribution line, each frame having a frame start and a plurality of control channels and voice channels of which respective voice and control channels are associated with respective line interface units. The controller can instruct each line interface unit on the control channel of that unit, to issue ringing voltage, dial tone, busy tone or ringing tone, and it selectively couples the voice channels to the ISDN line. Each line interface unit can inform the communications controller, on the control channel of that unit, of switch-hook status of the connected telephone, a dialed directory number or dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) digits collected. It also performs analog to digital coding and decoding of outbound and inbound voice signals, respectively, between the connected telephone and the voice channel of that unit.

Method Of Convenient Call Acceptance For An Isdn Communications Controller

US Patent:
6125127, Sep 26, 2000
Filed:
Mar 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/820334
Inventors:
Robert Lynn Smith - Cary NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
H04J 312
US Classification:
370524
Abstract:
In system having a plurality of telephones coupled to a communications controller which is connected to an integrated services digital network (ISDN) line of a telecommunications network, the ISDN line having two bearer channels of predetermined bandwidth and a data channel and the plurality of telephones being represented by a plurality of identifiers, a method for convenient incoming call acceptance comprises the communications controller associating each identifier for the plurality of telephones with a distinctive ring pattern. The controller receives, on the data channel, a dialed identifier of the plurality of identiers which was dialed in connection with an incoming call and rings all idle telephones of the plurality of telephones according to the distinctive ring pattern associated with the dialed identifier. The controller connects a first telephone of the idle telephones which goes off-hook, through a voice subchannel extracted from the bandwidth of the two bearer channels, to the incoming call.

Half-Cycle Summation V/Hz Relay For Generator And Transformer Over-Excitation Protection

US Patent:
5805395, Sep 8, 1998
Filed:
Dec 13, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/766715
Inventors:
Yi Hu - Cary NC
David Hart - Raleigh NC
Damir Novosel - Cary NC
Robert Smith - Cary NC
Assignee:
ABB Power T&D Company Inc. - Raleigh NC
International Classification:
H02H 706
US Classification:
361 21
Abstract:
A system for implementing accurate V/Hz value measurement and trip time determination for generator/transformer overexcitation protection independent of the conventional frequency tracking and phasor estimation based on Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) techniques. The half-cycle summation technique of the invention is a non-recursive digital technique which measures the per unit V/Hz value by summing the sampled data points in every half cycle of a sinusoidal input signal and dividing the sum with the ideal base sum value. When the input voltage signal is sampled at a reasonable frequency, the technique of the invention approximates the accurate per unit V/Hz value of the input voltage signal and thus obtains an accurate V/Hz characteristic directly without computing voltage and frequency separately.

Modified Cosine Filters

US Patent:
6154687, Nov 28, 2000
Filed:
Apr 15, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/060458
Inventors:
David G. Hart - Raleigh NC
Damir Novosel - Cary NC
Robert A. Smith - Cary NC
Assignee:
ABB Power T&D Company Inc. - Raleigh NC
International Classification:
H02J 114, H02J 302, H02J 1700, H02H 700, H02H 900
US Classification:
700294
Abstract:
A high sample rate cosine filter eliminates DC components by summing them such that they sum to zero. A non-orthogonal cosine filter is also provided. When the cosine filter is applied for N=4 samples per cycle, the samples are separated by 90 degrees. However, at higher sampling rates, it is not necessary to wait for 90 degrees to estimate the phasor value. Non-orthogonal components are used to estimate the phasor value. The time delay associated with the cosine filter is reduced in the process.
