Atomic Resolution Storage Systems With Enhanced Magnetic Field Protection

US Patent:
6704267, Mar 9, 2004
Filed:
Mar 23, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/815785
Inventors:
Robert J. Davidson - Boise ID
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G11B 700
US Classification:
369101
Abstract:
Memory storage devices that employ atomic resolution storage technology are provided. A preferred memory storage device includes a storage medium that defines one or more coverage areas. Each of the coverage areas incorporates a storage area that is configurable in one of a plurality of structural states. Typically, the structural states represent information stored in the storage area. Electron beam emitters electrically communicate with the storage medium, with the storage medium and the emitters being configured to move relative to each other. So configured, each emitter is capable of providing a beam of electrons to a respective one of the coverage areas. The memory storage device also includes a first current source that selectively electrically communicates with at least one of the emitters. Additionally, a shield is provided that is configured to reduce an influence of a magnetic field so that a tendency of an electron emitted from one of the emitters to be displaced from an intended trajectory is reduced. Methods also are provided.

Interferometer Apparatus And Method For Determining The Spatial Relationship Of Two Or More Objects

US Patent:
4681447, Jul 21, 1987
Filed:
Aug 26, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/900266
Inventors:
Robert J. Davidson - Boise ID
Assignee:
Hewlett Packard Company - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G01B 902, G01B 1102
US Classification:
356351
Abstract:
Interferometer apparatus for determining the spatial relationship of two or more observed points such as the height of a magnetic transducer head as it moves over the surface of a spinning recording disc. A monochromatic light beam having components of characteristic polarization and frequency is separated with one component being directed upon the two observation points one of which may be on the transducer head and other may be on the spinning disc. The other component is simultaneously directed upon a reference surface. The reflected beams are then combined to produce an optical beat frequency which is subsequently detected electronically and converted to a voltage representative of the phase shift between images of the two points and utilized to provide the display of the distance between the two points.

Inventors:
Gary R. Ashton - Eagle ID, US
Robert J. Davidson - Boise ID, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01L 47/02
US Classification:
257 4, 257 3, 257 5, 257 42, 257 44, 257613, 257614, 257 10, 257 11
Abstract:
An ultra-high density data storage device using phase-change diode memory cells, and having a plurality of emitters for directing beams of directed energy, a layer for forming multiple data storage cells and a layered diode structure for detecting a memory or data state of the storage cells, wherein the device comprises a phase-change data storage layer capable of changing states in response to the beams from the emitters, comprising a material containing copper, indium and selenium. A method of forming a diode structure for a phase-change data storage array, having multiple thin film layers adapted to form a plurality of data storage cell diodes, wherein the method comprises depositing a first diode layer of material on a substrate, and depositing a second diode layer of phase-change material on the first diode layer, the phase-change material containing copper, indium and selenium.

Personal Movie Storage Module

US Patent:
2002009, Jul 18, 2002
Filed:
Jan 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/760242
Inventors:
Robert Davidson - Boise ID, US
International Classification:
H04N007/173
US Classification:
725/087000
Abstract:
A personal movie storage module allows an individual to select and store a movie into the module for later retrieval and viewing. The module includes an atomic resolution memory device and a communication interface. The memory device is capable of storing one or more movies while the communication interface permits writing to and reading from the memory device. Using the module, an individual can capture a packet of entertainment media, such as a movie from a purchase center, such as a kiosk in an airport. The movie is retrieved from the module at the individual's convenience using a media player (e.g., DVD-type player, notebook computer, etc.). In one embodiment, the memory device includes an atomic resolution storage device, which is subminiature in size, allowing it to be contained within a small housing, has low power requirements, and provides for non-volatile storage of large amounts of data, including video.
