Re-Linked Portable Data Terminal Controller System

US Patent:
4247908, Jan 27, 1981
Filed:
Dec 8, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/967805
Inventors:
Robert K. Lockhart - Lauderhill FL
William J. Macko - Tamarac FL
Robert H. Bass - Sunrise FL
Craig S. Wallace - Coral Springs FL
Morris A. Moore - Sunrise FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G06F 304
US Classification:
364900
Abstract:
A two-way communications system for use with a host computer includes a control unit, a base station and multiple radio/data terminal units. The control unit interfaces directly with the computer but uses a radio link to the portable units. Voice and data signals can be transmitted and data between units is decoded, sorted, stored, encoded, and sent to its destination in accordance with predetermined protocol in queue discipline. An extensive self-diagnostic system is included. An active redundancy arrangement switches between two control units/base stations on a regular schedule if both units are up, and instantaneously if the "on" unit goes down.

Three Dimensional Optical Viewing System

US Patent:
5589980, Dec 31, 1996
Filed:
Jun 23, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/256402
Inventors:
Robert Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL
John Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL
International Classification:
G02B 2722
US Classification:
359478
Abstract:
Optical viewing system for producing a simulated three dimensional image. The system includes electronic equipment for displaying an image on a first electronic display device. Additional electronic equipment is provided for displaying an image on at least one second display device. The at least one second electronic display device is a substantially transparent display device, whereby an observer can view through transparent areas of the second electronic display device. The first and second electronic display devices are located at different, predetermined locations along an optical viewing path such that the image displayed by the first electronic display device is projected through the second electronic display device. The first electronic display device includes an image projector and the second electronic display device includes a controllable pixel display spaced therefrom. The controllable pixel display is comprised of a positive pixel display panel having a field of pixel elements which are controllably illuminated.

Optical Viewing System For Asynchronous Overlaid Images

US Patent:
5956180, Sep 21, 1999
Filed:
Dec 31, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/778726
Inventors:
Robert Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL
John Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL
International Classification:
G02B 2722
US Classification:
359479
Abstract:
An optical viewing system for producing multiple image displays comprises a first screen for displaying a first two-dimensional image on a first electronic display device at a first predetermined distance from an observer and a second screen for displaying a second two-dimensional image on a second electronic display device at a second predetermined distance from the observer. Each of the screens is located at different predetermined locations on an optical viewing path relatively nearer to and farther from the observer. The first two-dimensional image is projected through the second screen, creating a multiple overlaid picture image. The first and second electronic display devices are operable asynchronously without degrading the multiple overlaid picture image. The screen disposed in the optical viewing path at the predetermined location nearer to the observer is partially transparent.

Function Coding Via Digital Addresses In A Two-Way System

US Patent:
4641364, Feb 3, 1987
Filed:
Dec 8, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/967762
Inventors:
Robert H. Bass - Sunrise FL
Robert K. Lockhart - Lauderhill FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 700
US Classification:
455 32
Abstract:
Increased efficiency in the use of a communications channel between a Control Unit and a multiplicity of terminal or satellite units by utilizing the combinations of the unit address code words and their complements as coded commands and automatically returned responses. At least one combination of the Control Unit address code words and word complements can be manually entered at any one of the satellite units to serve as a special response to one combination of the respective satellite address code words and word complements, to cause a change of function or operation at the Control Unit. The system may be coupled to a Host Computer and normally the information received by the Control Unit would be encoded for transmission to the computer, in which case the change of function could be the disenabling of transmission to the Host Computer.

Polling System For A Duplex Communications Link

US Patent:
4251865, Feb 17, 1981
Filed:
Dec 8, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/968066
Inventors:
Morris A. Moore - Sunrise FL
Robert H. Bass - Sunrise FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G06F 304, H04J 600, H04Q 500
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
Channel efficiency in a communications link between a controller and multiple portable units is increased by polling the active units and a set number of inactive units in a sequence where a "poll" consists of sending the binary coded address of the portable unit. The stream of transmitted data bits is only interrupted by a response from the portable unit, then resumed at the end of the response or a given portion of the response. During the reception of the response, certain other types of messages can be sent out by the controller. Portable responses can be automatic responses as to status, etc. , or can be data initiated by the operator of the portable unit keyboard and stored in the portable unit memory until "armed" by the operator, then automatically transmitted to the controller when the portable unit address is received.

Portable Carrying Device With Retractable Strap

US Patent:
2005004, Mar 3, 2005
Filed:
Aug 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/652455
Inventors:
Robert Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL, US
John Bass - Fort Lauderdale FL, US
International Classification:
B65H075/40
US Classification:
224162000
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a portable carrying device that includes a housing, an elongated flexible strap extendable from the housing, and at least one rigid support arm attached to the housing and configured for supporting an article to be carried. The portable carrying device can include a coupler disposed on a first end of the elongated flexible strap and a mating structure disposed on a portion of the housing for releasably securing the coupler. The rigid support arm can be movable from a first position in which the rigid support arm is compactly stored relative to the housing, to a second position in which the rigid support arm is at least partially extended away from the housing. The housing can have at least one recess for receiving the rigid support arm and the rigid support arm can have a shape corresponding to the recess.
