Virtual Prototyping And Testing For Medical Device Development

US Patent:
8224632, Jul 17, 2012
Filed:
Oct 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/904994
Inventors:
Robert G. Whirley - Santa Rosa CA, US
Michael V. Chobotov - Santa Rosa CA, US
Assignee:
Trivascular, Inc. - Santa Rosa CA
International Classification:
G06F 17/50
US Classification:
703 7, 703 11
Abstract:
A system and method of developing better-designed medical devices, particularly cardiovascular stents and endovascular grafts. The system comprises a geometry generator, a mesh generator, a stress/strain/deformation analyzer, and a visualization tool. In one embodiment, the geometry generator receives three-dimensional volumetric data of an anatomical feature and generates a geometric model. The mesh generator then receives such geometric model of an anatomical feature or an in vitro model and a geometric model of a candidate medical device. In another embodiment, the mesh generator only receives a geometric model of the candidate medical device. Using the geometric model(s) received, the mesh generator creates or generates a mesh or a finite element model. The stress/strain/deformation analyzer then receives the mesh, and the material models and loads of that mesh. Using analysis, preferably non-linear analysis, the stress/strain/deformation analyzer determines the predicted stresses, strains, and deformations on the candidate medical device.

Inflatable Porous Implants And Methods For Drug Delivery

US Patent:
7803178, Sep 28, 2010
Filed:
Jan 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/769532
Inventors:
Robert G. Whirley - Santa Rosa CA, US
James M. Shapiro - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
TriVascular, Inc. - Santa Rosa CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/06
US Classification:
623 113, 623 121, 623 139, 623 142
Abstract:
The present invention provides inflatable porous implants, such as grafts, stent-grafts, and bladders, as well as methods and kits for drug delivery. In particular, the grafts and stent-grafts of the present invention provide for the delivery of a therapeutic agent into a flow conduit in the body. The inflatable porous implants provide for direct delivery of larger, more precise dosages of drugs over longer administration periods into the body. Moreover, these inflatable porous implants are often flexible when inserted and have a low profile delivery configuration for easy placement. The implants of the present invention further provide a mechanical or structural function in addition to drug delivery in a single integrated structure.

Crash Energy-Management Structure

US Patent:
5681057, Oct 28, 1997
Filed:
Apr 10, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/632345
Inventors:
Robert G. Whirley - Santa Rosa CA
Bruce E. Engelmann - Sebastopol CA
Assignee:
U.S. Electricar - Santa Rosa CA
International Classification:
B60K 104, B62D 2115
US Classification:
280784
Abstract:
An electric-powered vehicle or a vehicle converted from internal combustion power to electrical power is provided having increased crashworthiness. The present invention provides crash energy management structures for such vehicles to achieve the increased crashworthiness. Because of the additional mass added to such vehicles by an energy source containment unit and the associated batteries, the crash energy management structure functions either to prevent an energy source containment unit from moving forward as a result of a collision or to enhance the strength of the crumple zone, or both, whether the vehicle is of monocoque construction, frame construction, or some combination thereof.
