Implantable Epilepsy Monitor Apparatus

US Patent:
4566464, Jan 28, 1986
Filed:
Jul 27, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/286851
Inventors:
Vincent A. Piccone - Staten Island NY
John N. Piccone - Staten Island NY
Louis A. Piccone - Staten Island NY
Robert F. LeVeen - Philadelphia PA
Eric G. LeVeen - Albany NY
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128732
Abstract:
A low-power personal epilepsy seizure warning system is disclosed based on the clinical observation that while the brain potentials marking the onset of epilepsy vary from patient to patient, indicative brain potentials in any one patient are highly likely to remain constant. The system includes an implantable monitor to detect brain potentials and recognize the onset of a seizure, and an external warning unit to warn the patient when a seizure is imminent. The monitor is configured to recognize a patient's indicative potentials after preoperative EEG observation, and may include relatively simple analog circuitry to recognize simple forms, or a microprocessor and programmed memory to recognize complex forms utilizing algorithms such as the fast Fourier transform. An external program adjustment unit may also be utilized to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the monitor corresponding to the patient's experience of insufficient or excessive warnings after implantation. Since the implanted monitor uses high power for transmission only during warnings or sensitivity adjustment, its overall consumption of power is low and it may be expected to operate without the need for replacement over a period of several years.

Production Of Angiogenetic Factor

US Patent:
4529590, Jul 16, 1985
Filed:
Dec 27, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/453795
Inventors:
Robert F. LeVeen - Philadelphia PA
Eric G. LeVeen - Charleston SC
International Classification:
A61K 3512, A61K 3900
US Classification:
424 95
Abstract:
A process for the production of tumor angiogenetic factor and the production of antigens from a purified angiogenetic factor is shown in the present invention. The production of tumor angiogenetic factor is accomplished by injecting a material of a suitable composition to initiate production of fluid in the cavity of a living animal by inciting an inflammatory response in the cavity tissues, which response is characterized by the production of granulation tissue comprised mostly of new capillaries. After the body cavity is partly filled with the exudate, the fluid is tapped out of the cavity and purified to yield angiogenetic factor. The production of antigens is accomplished by dissolving the purified angiogenetic factor in an equal volume of distilled water, reacting the dissolved angiogenetic factor in the distilled water with a gluteraldehyde solution for at least twelve (12) hours and lyophilizing resulting mixture for storage. Animals injected with the product produce antibodies which react with the purified angiogenetic factor.

Internal Vascular Prosthesis

US Patent:
4820298, Apr 11, 1989
Filed:
Nov 20, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/123367
Inventors:
Eric G. Leveen - Charleston SC
Robert F. Leveen - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
A61F 206, A61F 202, A61B 1704
US Classification:
623 1
Abstract:
A medical stent for use in an aneurysm constructed with a flexible tubular body formed from a medical thermoplastic in the form of a helix. The flexible tubular body defines a lumen and the body is adapted to assume a substantial linear configuration when mounted on a stylet with the material of the body having a recovery memory which causes it to assume a helical configuration when it is removed from the stylet. The body is provided with strands which are connected to adjacent loops of the helix and extend in the space defined by each coil of the helix to allow clot and ingrowth of tissue to seal off the dilated portion of the vessel.

Vein And Tubing Passer Surgical Instrument

US Patent:
4418693, Dec 6, 1983
Filed:
Dec 10, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/215047
Inventors:
Eric G. LeVeen - Albany NY
Robert F. LeVeen - Philadelphia PA
Jeanette L. Rubricius - Charleston SC
International Classification:
A61B 1700
US Classification:
128303R
Abstract:
An apparatus for vessel transfer comprising a tubular outer member and an inner slidable member one of which is rigid and the other of which is flexible. After the apparatus has been inserted in the body tissue, the rigid member is withdrawn from the body leaving the flexible member in place. A vein, prosthesis or elastomeric tubing attaching structure is secured to the end of the flexible member so that the flexible member can be used to pull said vein, prosthesis or elastomeric tubing through the body tissues to an elected distant site where the tip of the flexible member has been surgically exposed.

Catheter Advancer

US Patent:
4389208, Jun 21, 1983
Filed:
Nov 6, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/204630
Inventors:
Robert F. LeVeen - Philadelphia PA
Eric G. LeVeen - Albany NY
International Classification:
A61M 2500
US Classification:
604 95
Abstract:
A tubular device for advancing a medical treatment or examination instrument in a tubular passageway and having a head portion with outwardly biassed, rearwardly extending, flexible legs and a tail portion with outwardly biassed, rearwardly extending, flexible legs. The head and tail portions are interconnected by a fluid extensible bellows, and alternate expansion and contraction of the bellows causes advance of the head and following motion by the tail, the legs engaging the passageway wall and permitting forward motion but preventing backward motion through the passageway. In one embodiment of the device the head and tail parts are generally cylindrical and relatively rigid. In another embodiment, the head and tail portions each has extensible bellows arranged within a deformable cage constituted by jointed, flexible legs arranged to project outwardly to engage the passageway wall when the bellows they surround is contracted. The actuating fluid can be air supplied and withdrawn through a flexible tube or tubes communicating with the bellows and advancing with the device.
