Storing A Small File With A Reduced Storage And Memory Footprint

US Patent:
2013011, May 2, 2013
Filed:
Oct 26, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/282454
Inventors:
VISHAL CHITTRANJAN ASLOT - AUSTIN TX, US
ADEKUNLE BELLO - AUSTIN TX, US
ROBERT WRIGHT THOMPSON - AUSTIN TX, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 12/10
US Classification:
711203, 711E12068
Abstract:
An I/O request to store a file in a file-system is received. A determination is made whether the size of the file does not exceed a threshold size. Exceeding the threshold results in storing at least a portion of the file in a block of the file-system devoid of sub-blocks. A determination is made whether the size of the file does not exceed a size of unallocated space within a single block in the file-system. The single block includes a set of sub-blocks. Responsive to the size of the file not exceeding the threshold size and the size of unallocated space within the single block, the file is stored, at an address, in a first subset of the set of the sub-blocks of the single block. The address identifies the single block and a position of a sub-block in the subset.

Data Processor Having Multiple Cycle Operand Cycles

US Patent:
4751632, Jun 14, 1988
Filed:
May 7, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/861742
Inventors:
David S. Mothersole - Austin TX
Jay A. Hartvigsen - Tempe AZ
Robert R. Thompson - Austin TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
In a data processor adapted to perform operations upon operands of a given size, a bus controller is provided to communicate the operands with a storage device having a data port which may be a submultiple of the operand size. In response to a signal from the bus controller requesting the transfer of an operand of a particular size, the storage device provides a size signal indicating the size of the data port available to accommodate the requested transfer. Depending upon the size of the operand to be transferred and the size of the data port of the storage device, the bus controller may break the operand transfer cycle into several bus cycles in order to completely transfer the operand. In the process, the bus controller compensates for any address misalignment between the operand and the data port. In order to distinguish individual operand cycles from the several bus cycles which may comprise the operand cycle, the bus controller provides an operand cycle start signal only at the start of the first bus cycle of each operand cycle.

Context Sensitive Reusable Inline Data Deduplication

US Patent:
2013031, Nov 21, 2013
Filed:
May 21, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/476453
Inventors:
Vishal Chittranjan Aslot - Austin TX, US
Adekunle Bello - Austin TX, US
Brian W. Hart - Austin TX, US
Robert Wright Thompson - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707692, 707E17002
Abstract:
A computer identifies a relationship among a subset of a set of data blocks, a basis of the relationship forming a context shared by the subset of data blocks. The computer selects a code data structure from a set of code data structures using the context. The context is associated with the code data structure, and the code data structure includes a set of codes. The computer computes, for a first data block in the subset of data blocks, a first code corresponding to a content of the first data block. The computer determines whether the first code matches a stored code in the code data structure. The computer replaces, responsive to the first code matching the stored code, the first data block with a reference to an instance of the first data block. The computer causes the reference to be stored in a target data processing system.

Tracking File Contents

US Patent:
8392386, Mar 5, 2013
Filed:
Aug 5, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/535773
Inventors:
Robert W Thompson - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 7/00, G06F 17/00, G06F 12/00, G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707695, 707828, 707830
Abstract:
A method, system, and computer usable program product for tracking file contents are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A content inode corresponding to a content is created, the content being in a file, the file being stored in a computer memory, and the file being locatable using a file system executing under an operating system in a data processing system. An operation, a component, an application, or a combination thereof, is detected operating with respect to the content. A descriptor and a location corresponding to the operation, the component, the application, or the combination thereof, is determined and added to the content inode. A location identifier corresponding to the location is added to the content inode. The content inode with the added descriptor and location identifier enables an application to learn about the operation, the component, the application, or the combination thereof, having operated with respect to the content.

Preventing Log Wrap With Debug Scripts

US Patent:
2012013, May 31, 2012
Filed:
Nov 30, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/956814
Inventors:
Robert Wright Thompson - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 11/07, G06F 9/00
US Classification:
714 48, 713 1, 714E11025
Abstract:
A shell debug application avoids loss of debug log data for configured commands during the operation of an operating system. A shell debug application executes a command shell script, by a computer, to control an amount of code path debug data captured in memory buffers and saved. The shell debug application obtains, by the computer, a configuration file that includes at least one command. The shell debug application runs the command shell script in the configuration file in response to detection of at least one script associated with the at least one command in the configuration file.
