Philosophy:
I am pleased to introduce myself and my staff. I am a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. Although I am trained in all types of orthopaedic surgery, I have chosen to limit my practice to the treatment of the shoulder and elbow. I do most of my surgeries with an arthroscope. Sometimes it is not possible to do so, such as with large rotator cuff tear repairs, shoulder replacements or certain types of reconstructions of the shoulder. I have done several thousand shoulder arthroscopies. I was the first surgeon to do arthroscopy of the shoulder in Anchorage, over twenty years ago. I have helped evolve some of the current techniques in arthroscopic shoulder surgery during its early years. Staying on top of current developments in the treatment of shoulder conditions requires that my staff and I take extra effort but we feel that it is a very important aspect to providing expert orthopaedic care.

Intraarticular Drill Guide And Arthroscopic Methods

US Patent:
5584839, Dec 17, 1996
Filed:
Dec 12, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/355404
Inventors:
Robert E. Gieringer - Anchorage AK
International Classification:
A61B 1717, A61B 1756
US Classification:
606 96
Abstract:
An intraarticular drill guide having a cannulated guide shaft and a sliding shaft mounted for both reciprocal movement and axial rotation. A hook attached to the distal end of the sliding shaft is provided for locating against a bone positioned between it and the cannulated guide shaft. The drill guide has a handle for pulling back on the sliding shaft to force the tip of the hook into the far side of the bone. The method of the invention involves pressing the cannulated guide shaft against a bone through an arthroscopic portal. The sliding shaft with a hook at its end is inserted into the joint. Pulling back on the sliding shaft holds the bone between the hook and the cannulated guide shaft. A drill is operated through the cannulated guide shaft. A tissue repair is completed in accordance with the invention by passing suture ends through the tunnel that is drilled and tying them about a button anchor.

Arthroscopic Suture Thread And Method Of Use

US Patent:
2004001, Jan 15, 2004
Filed:
Jun 27, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/608652
Inventors:
Robert Gieringer - Anchorage AK, US
International Classification:
A61B017/04
US Classification:
606/228000
Abstract:
An arthroscopic suture thread and method for using same with a suture punch system. The system having a passageway, a hollow needle at a distal end of the passageway, and a feeder wheel proximate to a proximal end of the passageway. The suture thread of one embodiment made from a non-bioabsorbable material includes a coupled, sufficiently stiff and long leader portion for permitting the feeder wheel to facilitate advancement along the passageway and through the hollow needle. The suture thread of a second embodiment is a braided non-bioabsorbable thread coated with a sufficiently stiff bioabsorbable material.
