Use Of Deashed Coal As A Flushing Agent In A Coal Deashing Process

US Patent:
4153538, May 8, 1979
Filed:
Mar 20, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/888299
Inventors:
Robert E. Leonard - Oklahoma City OK
Donald E. Rhodes - Oklahoma City OK
Assignee:
Kerr-McGee Corporation - Oklahoma City OK
International Classification:
C10G 2114
US Classification:
208177
Abstract:
A process for maintaining the fluid-like properties of a heavy phase being withdrawn from a separation zone maintained at elevated temperature and pressure during periods in which the flow of this heavy phase is terminated due to pressure reduction valve plugging or to permit cleaning of downstream processing apparatus. When the flow of withdrawn heavy phase is interrupted, deashed coal is melted, if necessary, and introduced under pressure into the withdrawal conduit to mix with the heavy phase therein. The mixture of deashed coal and heavy phase retains the fluid-like properties exhibited by the heavy phase and flow can be resumed once the downstream apparatus is repaired. Alternatively, other high-boiling aromatic materials may be used instead of the deashed coal.

Method Of Improving Yield In A Coal Liquefaction Product Deashing Process

US Patent:
4164466, Aug 14, 1979
Filed:
Mar 20, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/888284
Inventors:
Roger A. Baldwin - Warr Acres OK
Robert E. Davis - Oklahoma City OK
Robert E. Leonard - Oklahoma City OK
Donald E. Rhodes - Oklahoma City OK
Assignee:
Kerr-McGee Corporation - Oklahoma City OK
International Classification:
C10G 104, C10G 2920
US Classification:
208177
Abstract:
A coal deashing process wherein a feed mixture comprising soluble coal products, insoluble coal products and solvent is separated in a first separation zone into a first heavy phase and a first light phase comprising soluble coal products, solvent and some insoluble coal products. The first light phase is withdrawn and introduced into a second separation zone wherein it separates into a second heavy phase comprising insoluble coal products, soluble coal products and some solvent and a second light phase comprising soluble coal products and solvent. The second heavy phase is withdrawn and at least a portion is recycled to the first separation zone to increase the yield of separable soluble coal products ultimately recovered by the process. In alternate embodiments, additional solvent can be added to the first light phase before introduction into the second separation zone or the recycled portion of the second heavy phase may be introduced into a treatment zone before reintroduction into the first separation zone. The treatment zone effects an increase in the molecular weight of at least a portion of the recycled second heavy phase which facilitates subsequent separation in the first separation zone.

Soot Removal From Exhaust Gas

US Patent:
5125230, Jun 30, 1992
Filed:
Jan 16, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/641948
Inventors:
Robert E. Leonard - Oklahoma City OK
Assignee:
Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation
International Classification:
F01N 302
US Classification:
60274
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for removing soot from an exhaust gas stream wherein the exhaust gas stream is contacted with water to provide a substantially water saturated exhaust gas stream, particles and droplets in the water saturated gas stream then are electrically charged to produce a gas stream containing electrically charged particles and droplets, and an electric field is established for electrostatically attracting and de-entraining soot and soot containing water droplets from the gas stream containing electrically charged particles and droplets to provide a substantially soot free exhaust gas stream. The present invention includes a precipitator wherein the insulators are positioned in low dew point relatively clean locations and, in one embodiment, includes the use of the exhaust gas stream to maintain the temperature level of the insulators above dew point. In one other embodiment, the condensate produced as a result of electrostatically attracting and de-entraining soot and soot containing water droplets from the exhaust gas stream containing electrically charged particles and droplets is recirculated and used as part of the water for contacting the exhaust gas stream.

Process For Producing A Vapor Mixture Of Titanium Tetrachloride And Aluminum Trichloride

US Patent:
5300273, Apr 5, 1994
Filed:
Dec 3, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/985526
Inventors:
Robert E. Leonard - Oklahoma City OK
Assignee:
Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation - Oklahoma City OK
International Classification:
C01G 2302, C01F 748
US Classification:
423492
Abstract:
An improved process is provided for producing titanium tetrachloride vapor admixed with a desired particular amount of aluminum trichloride vapor for use in the production of rutile titanium dioxide. The vapor mixture is derived from a titanium tetrachloride solution containing the desired particular amount of aluminum trichloride. The solution is produced continuously by dissolving aluminum trichloride in a heated stream of liquid titanium tetrachloride utilizing a cyclic aluminum trichloride bed switching and recharging process.

Process For Utilizing Mineral-Containing Residue From Coal Liquefaction Processes

US Patent:
4249951, Feb 10, 1981
Filed:
Sep 7, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/073469
Inventors:
Robert E. Leonard - Oklahoma City OK
Assignee:
Kerr-McGee Corporation - Oklahoma City OK
International Classification:
C04B 736
US Classification:
106103
Abstract:
A process for utilizing mineral-containing residue from coal liquefaction processes to produce a hydraulic cement. The residue is mixed with siliceous and calcareous matereals and compacted. The compacted solids are introduced into a kiln and fired to produce hydraulic cement clinker. The primary fuel for the clinker production is contained in the residue. The clinker is removed from the kiln and ground to produce cement.
