Car Top Folding Tent

US Patent:
4396030, Aug 2, 1983
Filed:
Jan 18, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/340124
Inventors:
Robert W. Ferguson - Ann Arbor MI
Assignee:
The Oyster Tent Company - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
A45F 100
US Classification:
135 88
Abstract:
A folding tent assembly adapted to be mounted on a vehicle top or other suitable elevated surface. The assembly includes a pair of rigid base sections hingedly secured together and foldable to define a container in which the remainder of the tent can be stored, and unfoldable to define a planar platform a portion of which extends outwardly from the vehicle top or other elevated surface and on which a flexible cover and frame members can be supported to provide accommodations. A support member having a pair of upright legs, a plurality of cross bars and a pair of rigid extenders rotatably mounted on the upper ends of the legs is provided for bracing the outwardly extending portion of the platform. The extenders are rotatable between a folded position, in which the extenders are substantially parallel to the cross bars and in which the support member can be stored on top of the folded tent and within the confines of the separate travel cover; and a bracing position in which the extenders engage the platform. In the bracing position, the support member upholds the outwardly extending portion of the platform and serves as a ladder, providing access to the interior of the tent.

Folding Tent

US Patent:
4271856, Jun 9, 1981
Filed:
Nov 5, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/091182
Inventors:
Robert W. Ferguson - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
B60D 332, A45F 106
US Classification:
135 4A
Abstract:
A portable shelter assembly adapted to be mounted in a folded condition for transportation purposes preferably on the top of a motor vehicle, and to be unfolded and distended while supported either on the vehicle or on the ground to provide a tent for shelter purposes. The assembly includes a pair of rigid base sections hingedly secured together at inner edges and foldable to define a container in which the remainder of the tent can be stored, and unfoldable to define a planar platform with upturned forward and after edges on which a flexible cover and frame members can be supported to provide accommodations. A simplified hinge arrangement for the base sections and the associated pivotally supported frame members is provided, and the flexible cover, when distended, provides for interior ventilation and improved exterior drainage.

Tent

US Patent:
4465087, Aug 14, 1984
Filed:
Aug 1, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/519462
Inventors:
Robert W. Ferguson - Ann Arbor MI
Assignee:
Oyster Tent Company - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
A45F 100
US Classification:
135101
Abstract:
A tent comprises improved interior space and construction by means of separate fabric pieces each forming respective portions of the top and sidewalls which join along an arch-shaped seam disposed centrally between the longitudinal ends of the tent. The longitudinal ends are of trapezoidal shape and comprise triangular shaped openings and associated flaps for selectively opening and closing the openings. Inverted U-shaped structures support the ends of the tent and include rods extending through sleeves at the ends of the top wall. Poles connect to the ends of the rods and are inclined so as to exert outward and upward forces on the ends of the tent to tension the top and sidewalls.

Tent

US Patent:
4541445, Sep 17, 1985
Filed:
May 24, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/613700
Inventors:
Robert W. Ferguson - Ann Arbor MI
Assignee:
Oyster Tent Company - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
A45F 116
US Classification:
135106
Abstract:
A tent comprises end walls of trapezoidal shape and pole structures which support the tent via the tops of its end walls. A sleeve is provided along the top of each end wall and a ridge pole is disposed within the sleeve, the sleeves and the ridge poles being of essentially identical lengths. The sleeves are provided with openings facing downwardly and longitudinally inwardly, and end-to-end separably connected pole sections support the ends of the ridge poles. Supporting each end of each ridge pole are exactly three end-to-end separably connected pole sections. The lengths of all ridge poles and pole sections are essentially identical and equal to the width across an individual's shoulders whereby the tent can be collapsed into a compact package suitable for backpacking The ridge poles are bowed so as to be concave in an upward and outward sense and right angle fittings provide the connections between the ends of the ridge poles and the end-to-end connected pole sections which support the ends of the ridge poles.
