Power Factor And Harmonic Correction Circuit Including Ac Startup Circuit

US Patent:
5224029, Jun 29, 1993
Filed:
Aug 16, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/745817
Inventors:
Robert C. Newman - Emmaus PA
International Classification:
H02M 112, H02J 31
US Classification:
363 48
Abstract:
A circuit for correcting power factor and for reducing ac line current harmonic components in conjunction with bridge-connected capacitive-filtered loads and for providing a source of ac startup current for associated circuitry, for example a switch mode power supply which may form part of the load. The circuit comprises a rectifier bridge, a dual-tuned circuit having a tuned filter in series between an ac line input and the bridge, and a shunt capacitor across the input to the bridge. The tuned filter comprises a parallel connected inductor and capacitor, the shunt capacitor being tuned with the inductor to form a trap filter to reduce third-order and higher harmonic components in the ac line current. The circuit also includes a current source operatively connected to the shunt capacitor for providing a source of ac current immediately upon application of ac power to the ac line input.

Electronic Control Systems And Methods

US Patent:
2006011, Jun 8, 2006
Filed:
Jan 24, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/338324
Inventors:
Robert Newman - Emmaus PA, US
Assignee:
Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. - Coopersburg PA
International Classification:
H01H 33/59
US Classification:
307139000
Abstract:
An apparatus in an electronic control system allows two or three wire operation. A power supply can supply power to the enclosed circuitry in both two and three wire installations. Two separate zero cross detectors are used such that timing information can be collected in both two and three wire installations. Both zero cross detectors are monitored and are used to automatically configure the electronic control. Over voltage circuitry senses an over voltage condition across a MOSFET which is in the off state and turns the MOSFET on so that it desirably will not reach the avalanche region. Over current circuitry senses when the current through the MOSFETs has exceeded a predetermined current threshold and then turns the MOSFETs off so they do not exceed the MOSFETs' safe operating area (SOA) curve. Latching circuitry is employed to keep the protection circuitry in effect even after a fault condition has cleared. Lockout circuitry is used to prevent one protection circuit from tripping after the other circuit has already tripped from a fault condition. The protection circuitry output is desirably configured such that it can bypass and override the normal turn on and turn off impedance and act virtually directly on the gates of the MOSFETs. Preferably, the system has a high efficiency switching type power supply in parallel with a low frequency controllably conductive device.

In response to controls signals received from the accessory timer, the electronic timer is operable to adjust the preset timeout period, enable the delivery of power to the load, discontinue the delivery of power to the load, and to enter a bypass mode in which the load is turned on for an indefinite amount of time. The accessory timer may be coupled to the electronic timer via a single conductor, a wired digital communication link, a radio frequency communication link, an infrared communication link, or a power line carrier communication link.
