Bar Code Reading System And Method

US Patent:
4438327, Mar 20, 1984
Filed:
Apr 21, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/370373
Inventors:
Robert E. Smith - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Burr-Brown Research Corporation - Tucson AZ
International Classification:
G06K 710
US Classification:
235462
Abstract:
A bar code reading system having a wand that detects variations in light reflected by bars and spaces of the label produces a sequence of corresponding pulses and intervals as the wand scans the label. The entire sequence of pulses and intervals is input to a microprocessor system which produces corresponding digital duration numbers. The microprocessor system computes a reference number for a first character of the label and compares each digital duration number of the character to the reference number to compute a binary number with bits that are a "one" or a "zero" according to whether corresponding digital internal numbers exceed or are less than the reference number. If the number of "ones" in the binary number is too low or too high, the microprocessor decreases or increases the reference time, compares the digital duration number with the adjusted reference number, and re-determines if the resulting value of the binary number has the correct number of "ones". This compensates for variations in scan speed over different characters of the label.

Zinc Oxide Inhibited Emulsion Explosives And Method

US Patent:
6125761, Oct 3, 2000
Filed:
Aug 7, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/908654
Inventors:
Robert G. Smith - Tucson AZ
Harry R. Fee - Green Valley AZ
Assignee:
Southwest Energy Inc. - Tucson AZ
International Classification:
F42B 300
US Classification:
102313
Abstract:
A method of blasting in reactive ores includes diluting hot liquor of ammonium nitrate with water to provide diluted ammonium nitrate solution of predetermined concentration, adjusting the pH of the liquor of the ammonium nitrate solution, adding a predetermined amount of gassing agent to the ammonium nitrate solution, and emulsifying the ammonium nitrate solution. Then an effective amount of fine zinc oxide powder is mixed with the emulsion explosive and the inhibited emulsion explosive is introduced into a borehole and detonated.

Redundant Serial Communication Circuit

US Patent:
4475049, Oct 2, 1984
Filed:
May 7, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/261637
Inventors:
Robert E. Smith - Tucson AZ
Francis L. Payne - Tucson AZ
International Classification:
H03K 1716, H04B 302
US Classification:
307441
Abstract:
A circuit for carrying data between a host system and a remote unit includes first and second edge-triggered delay-type flip-flops coupled to first and second input lines, respectively. Combinational logic coupled to the output of the first flip-flop and to the first and second input lines transmits data on at least one of the input lines to the remote unit. This creates a redundancy which provides for the continued transmission of data between the host and the remote unit in the event that one of the input channels fails.
