Inventors:
Richard Sweeney - Winchester MA
Nicholas G. Lazaris - Newton MA
Roderick H. Beaulieu - Cumberland RI
William P. Bucuzzo - Haverhill MA
Assignee:
Keurig, Incorporated - Wakefield MA
International Classification:
B65B 2902
US Classification:
426 79, 426113, 426115, 426433, 99295, 99317, 206 65, 206222
Abstract:
A beverage filter cartridge includes a cup-shaped outer container with a bottom and a side wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to a circular rim surrounding an upper opening. The side wall has an upper section extending downwardly from the rim to an intermediate section, and a tapered lower section configured to provide a plurality of circumferentially spaced flutes extending downwardly from the intermediate section to the bottom wall. A filter element subdivides the interior of the container into first and second chambers. A beverage medium is stored in the first chamber. A cover is joined to the side wall at the rim to close the upper opening. The cover is yieldably piercable to accommodate an injection of liquid into the first chamber for combination with the beverage medium to produce a beverage. The filter element is permeable to accommodate a flow of the beverage from the first chamber into the second chamber, and the bottom wall is yieldably piercable to accommodate an outflow of the beverage from the second chamber to the exterior of the cartridge.

Re-Usable Beverage Filter Cartridge

Re-Usable Beverage Filter Cartridge

US Patent:
6658989, Dec 9, 2003
Filed:
Apr 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/115768
Inventors:
Richard P. Sweeney - Winchester MA
Nicholas G. Lazaris - Newton MA
Roderick H. Beaulieu - Cumberland RI
Assignee:
Keurig, Incorporated - Wakefield MA
International Classification:
A47J 3106
US Classification:
99315, 99306, 99322, 99323
Abstract:
For use in a single serve beverage brewer in which a measured charge of a dry beverage medium is infused with a metered amount of heated liquid to produce a beverage medium, a reusable beverage filter cartridge is provided for containing the beverage medium and for accommodating an inflow of the heated liquid and an outflow of the beverage medium. The cartridge comprises a cup-shaped housing having a top opening and a closed bottom with an outlet port. A filter internally subdivides the housing into a first chamber accessible via the top opening and configured and dimensioned to contain the beverage medium, and a second chamber communicating with the outlet port. A lid is removably secured to the housing in a position closing the top opening, and an inlet port in the lid serves to admit heated liquid into the first chamber for infusion with the beverage medium contained therein. The filter is permeable to accommodate a flow therethrough of the resulting beverage into the second chamber from which it exits via the outlet port.

Abstract:
A method of forming and inserting filter elements into cup-shaped containers comprises the steps of: a) folding a continuous web of filter material into two adjacent plies which have separable upper edges and are joined one to the other along a bottom fold line; b) blanking the adjacent plies to form their upper edges into a scalloped pattern; c) inserting carrier mandrels between the adjacent plies; d) joining the adjacent plies along seams extending transversely with respect to the bottom fold line to form a series of collapsed frustoconical filter elements interconnected by scrap segments and supported internally by the carrier mandrels; e) separating the filter elements one from the other by blanking and removing the scrap segments; f) transferring the filter elements from the carrier mandrels into cup-shaped containers arranged therebeneath; and g) securing the thus inserted filter elements to interior surfaces of the cup-shaped containers.

Automated Beverage Brewing System

Automated Beverage Brewing System

US Patent:
6142063, Nov 7, 2000
Filed:
Jan 19, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/232994
Inventors:
Roderick H. Beaulieu - Cumberland RI
James W. Wuertele - North Billerica MA
Richard P. Sweeney - Winchester MA
John E. Sylvan - Milton MA
Kenneth A. Focht - Needham MA
Jennie Kwo - Cambridge MA
Assignee:
Keurig, Inc. - Wakefield MA
International Classification:
A47J 3132
US Classification:
99283
Abstract:
An automated beverage brewing system includes a liquid storage tank and a metering chamber. The metering chamber is at least partially submerged beneath a standing level of liquid in the storage tank. The chamber includes a sealable liquid inlet port communicating with the interior of the storage tank beneath the standing level of liquid. The chamber also includes a liquid outlet port and an aperture that receives compressed air, wherein the compressed air forces a predetermined amount of liquid from the liquid output port of the chamber for use in preparing a brewed beverage. A pump provides the compressed air and a controller monitors a pressure signal value indicative of the air pressure in the metering chamber. The controller commands the pump on to commence flow of the predetermined amount of liquid from the metering chamber. The controller then commands the pump off several seconds after detecting a drop in air pressure within the chamber, indicating that the predetermined amount of liquid has been delivered to the brewing chamber.

Abstract:
A cup shaped holder is internally provided with an ejection mechanism which serves to automatically dislodge a spent beverage cartridge from an upwardly extending piercing member when the lid is opened at the end of a brewing cycle. In addition, the holder is mounted on externally protruding trunnions for pivotal movement between an upright brewing position and a partially inverted position to eject the dislodged cartridge from the holder into an underlying receptacle. The lid has a dependency arm that coacts with a pawl on the holder trunnions to automatically manipulate the holder to eject the cartridge.
