Electrosurgical Generator And Method For Detecting Output Power Delivery Malfunction

US Patent:
6830569, Dec 14, 2004
Filed:
Nov 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/300703
Inventors:
Richard Thompson - Centennial CO
Tim Refior - Parker CO
Assignee:
ConMed Corporation - Utica NY
International Classification:
A61B 1818
US Classification:
606 34, 606 42
Abstract:
Output power delivery from an electrosurgical generator is evaluated to avoid malfunctions and risk conditions. Output power is delivered in a selected delivery path and the flow of output power is sensed in the selected delivery path and other delivery paths which have not been selected. The output power delivery is terminated upon determining that output power is not flowing in the selected delivery path or that output power is flowing in a delivery path that was not selected.

Electrosurgical Generator And Method With Multiple Semi-Autonomously Executable Functions

US Patent:
6942660, Sep 13, 2005
Filed:
Nov 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/299953
Inventors:
Jim Pantera - Brighton CO, US
Ronald Shores - Greenwood Village CO, US
Richard Thompson - Centennial CO, US
Rodney Davis - Parker CO, US
Geoffrey W. Dolan - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
ConMed Corporation - Utica NY
International Classification:
A61B018/18
US Classification:
606 34, 606 38
Abstract:
Semi-autonomously executed routines accomplish the primary functions of electrosurgical energy delivery on a responsive basis for power control purposes and to adapt the delivered output waveform to perform new and better surgical procedures. The routines include and output voltage and output current sampling routine, a control routine for establishing the width of drive pulses used to create the output waveform, a pattern generation routine for establishing the pattern of drive pulses to be delivered in one mode cycle established by a selected mode of operation, a pattern delivery routine for repeatedly delivering sequences of the mode cycle pattern of drive pulses, and a power supply control routine for varying the voltage of the drive pulses in coordination with varying the width of the drive pulses.

Electrosurgical Generator And Method With Voltage And Frequency Regulated High-Voltage Current Mode Power Supply

US Patent:
6939347, Sep 6, 2005
Filed:
Nov 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/299951
Inventors:
Richard Thompson - Centennial CO, US
Assignee:
ConMed Corporation - Utica NY
International Classification:
A61B018/18
US Classification:
606 34, 128898
Abstract:
DC input energy is converted into DC output voltage by the use of a switched current mode high-voltage power supply. Pulses of input current are switched through a conversion transformer and the energy content of each pulse is converted into the DC output voltage. The time widths of the input current pulses are regulated relative to the DC input and output voltages, the magnitude of the current within each input current pulse, and in relation to maintaining a plurality of different selected operational conditions. The rate at which the input current pulses are converted is changed relative to the level of the DC output voltage.

Tissue Fusion System And Method For Performing A Self Test

US Patent:
2012002, Jan 26, 2012
Filed:
Jul 23, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/842606
Inventors:
Brian C. Stuebe - Broomfield CO, US
Richard K. Thompson - Centennial CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/08
US Classification:
606 31
Abstract:
An energy source of a thermal tissue operating system performs self-tests using simulation heating elements and jaw heating elements in tissue-grasping jaws of a handpiece. Power is supplied to the simulation heating elements and verified, without necessitating connection of a handpiece. Power is also delivered and verified to each of the two jaw heating elements when the handpiece is connected. Voltage and current are measured by peak hold detectors, and the peak hold detectors are tested to verify correct operation. All tests may be combined in a power on self-test (POST).

Waveform Generator For Electrosurgical Apparatus

US Patent:
4961739, Oct 9, 1990
Filed:
Mar 7, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/165143
Inventors:
Richard K. Thompson - Aurora CO
Assignee:
Aspen Labatories, Inc. - Greenwood Village CO
International Classification:
A61B 1739
US Classification:
606 37
Abstract:
A waveform generator for electrosurgical apparatus disclosed includes a MxNxP storage device and a parallel to series conversion device. For the storage device, M is the maximum number of different waveforms being stored, N equals the number of bits being output from the storage device at a time and P is the maximum number of N bits that can be stored for each waveform. An address counter selects the next N bits of the waveform and these N bits loaded from the storage device into the conversion device and output in a sequential or series output signal to drive the RF power amplifier of electrosurgical apparatus. The output signal has a bit rate N times faster than the storage device is accessed.
