Abstract:
A sketching system sketches first notes to be transmitted over a telephone line and receives second notes from another sketching system. The sketching system includes a signal de-combiner device, receiving the second notes from the another sketching system and voice data as a combined signal via the telephone line and de-combining the combined signal into the second notes and the voice data. In addition, the sketching system includes a sketching unit connected to the signal de-combiner. The sketching unit includes a note displaying device displaying the first and second notes, a note generating device generating the first notes, and a processor connected to the note displaying and generating devices and to the signal de-combiner, receiving the first notes from the note generating device, receiving the second notes from the de-combiner, and transmitting the first and second notes to the note displaying device. The sketching unit further includes a clearing unit selectively clearing one of the note displaying device and another note displaying device of the another sketching system and an erase unit selectively erasing the first and second notes displayed on one of the note displaying device and the another note displaying device. Finally, the sketching system includes a first lock device selectively preventing the processor from transmitting the first notes to the signal de-combiner preventing the first notes from being displayed on the another sketching system, and a second lock device for selectively preventing the processor from transmitting the second notes to the note displaying device.

Method And Apparatus For Simultaneous Voice/Data Transmission

US Patent:
5796716, Aug 18, 1998
Filed:
Nov 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/562954
Inventors:
Richard Kent Smith - Seminole FL
Assignee:
Paradyne Corporation - Largo FL
International Classification:
H04J 1100
US Classification:
370207
Abstract:
A method and simultaneous voice/data transmission of signals through a single communications channel wherein the transmitted voice and data signal quality is greatly enhanced over current practice. A time-varying stream of coded voice and data signals is simultaneously transmitted and the sequence of transmitted data signals is determined only after receiving data signals for a predetermined period of time. The received signals are buffered and a received coded data signal sequence is compared to a predetermined plurality of permissible coded data signal sequences to correlate the received coded data signal sequence with the particular permissible coded signal sequence with which the data signal was coded prior to transmission. The correlated data signal sequence is then separated from the combined voice and data signal to recover the coded voice signal. The recovered voice signal and correlated data signal sequence are thereafter decoded to recover the voice and data signals that were received and coded by the transmitter.

Simultaneous Analog And Digital Communication Applications

US Patent:
5537436, Jul 16, 1996
Filed:
Jun 14, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/076520
Inventors:
Stanley Bottoms - Seminole FL
Gordon Bremer - Clearwater FL
Joseph Q. Chapman - Largo FL
William R. Davis - Clearwater FL
Kenneth D. Ko - Clearwater FL
D. Randy Roberson - Oldsmar FL
Luke J. Smithwick - New Port Richey FL
Richard K. Smith - Seminole FL
Assignee:
AT&T Corp. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04B 138
US Classification:
375222
Abstract:
A number of arrangements and methods that achieve concurrent communication of analog information and digital information. In general terms, when the communication channel is viewed as a multi-dimensional space, the digital information signal is divided into symbols, and the symbols are mapped onto the signal space with a preset distance between them. The analog signal, generally limited in magnitude to less than half the distance separating the symbols, is converted to component signals and added (i. e. , vector addition) to the symbols. The sum signal is then transmitted to the receiver where the symbols are detected and subtracted from the received signal to yield the analog signal components. The transmitted analog signal is recreated from those components. Arrangements utilizing the above principles are applications where systems that include a digital port can benefit from an analog communication channel, and conversely, where systems that include an analog port can benefit from a digital communication channel.

Multiple Line Modem And Method For Providing Voice On Demand

US Patent:
5841840, Nov 24, 1998
Filed:
Dec 23, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/772734
Inventors:
Richard K. Smith - Seminole FL
Thomas J. Bingel - Belleair Beach FL
Assignee:
Paradyne Corporation - Largo FL
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 9301
Abstract:
A multiple line modem and method enable a user to automatically usurp a plurality of telephone lines for data transfer when the telephone is not in use and the ability to switch from multiple line data operation to one (or more) line data and one (or more) line telephone operation automatically when the telephone handset is lifted or an incoming call is detected signaling a request for voice service. The multiple line modem will automatically reestablish the data connection on the line(s) that was used for voice service when the voice service terminates. The multiple line modem allows end to end service that is transparent to the central office. When all lines are operating in data transfer mode, the aggregate data transfer rate is multiplied by the number of lines available for data transport. When one line(s) is operating in voice service mode, the other line(s) maintains data transfer operation at a reduced rate. The line(s) that is used for voice service is adaptively managed by the multiple line modem to provide seamless switching between data transfer mode operation when voice service is not requested and voice service mode operation when voice service is requested.

Adaptive Voice And Data Bandwidth Management System For Multiple-Line Digital Subscriber Loop Data Communications

US Patent:
5901205, May 4, 1999
Filed:
Oct 20, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/953904
Inventors:
Richard K. Smith - Seminole FL
Thomas J. Bingel - Belleair FL
Assignee:
Paradyne Corporation - Largo FL
International Classification:
H04M 1100
US Classification:
379 9301
Abstract:
An adaptive voice and data bandwidth management system is implemented in a subscriber loop to permit higher data rates and adaptive allocation of this increased capacity between multiple applications. The management system communicates digital data across multiple-lines when these lines are not in use by other communication equipment. However, when a request for use of a line by another device is detected, a modem clears down a subscriber line and connects the subscriber line to the appropriate communication device. As a result, simultaneous use of a modem and other communication devices is allowed. Once the other communication device ends its communication session, the system adapts to once again communicate digital data over multiple lines in order to increase the speed and efficiency of the data communication.

Simultaneous Voice And Data Call Establishment Using A Simultaneous Voice And Data Modem Pool And Private Branch Exchange Facilities

US Patent:
5602846, Feb 11, 1997
Filed:
Apr 8, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/225295
Inventors:
Kurt E. Holmquist - Largo FL
Richard K. Smith - Seminole FL
Assignee:
Paradyne Corporation - Largo FL
International Classification:
H04J 312
US Classification:
370384
Abstract:
A simultaneous voice and data (SVD) modem includes two analog ports and a data terminal port. Both of these analog ports are capable of transmitting telephone numbers and are coupled to a switching system like a private branch exchange (PBX). The data terminal port is coupled to a data terminal of an SVD user. In one embodiment of the invention, the SVD user, the calling party, sends at least one command to the SVD modem, via the data terminal port. In response, the SVD modem separately transmits, to the PBX, the calling party number from one of the analog ports and the called party number from the remaining analog port. The SVD modem then subsequently communicates any voice signals received on one of the analog ports to the other analog port. This allows a voice call to be switched through the SVD modem, yet requires no modification to the PBX.
