Ultrasonic Shelf Label Method And Apparatus

Ultrasonic Shelf Label Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
5442343, Aug 15, 1995
Filed:
Jun 21, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/080340
Inventors:
Robert T. Cato - Raleigh NC
Richard H. Harris - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 704
US Classification:
34082535
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for ultrasonically communicating information from a source to a destination and for acknowledging receipt of that information by the destination. The apparatus includes at least one processor, at least one transceiver, and at least one display device, each display device having a unique identifier. The processor communicates information for broadcast to the transceiver. The processor also performs digital signal processing for detecting an acknowledgement signal within a narrow bandwidth. The transceiver ultrasonically broadcasts an identifier and associated data to display devices within the broadcast area, and also receives ultrasonic signals. A display device includes a transducer, a comparator, a memory, a display panel, and logic. In the communication method, a processor, a transceivers, and a display device communicate by initially associating data with a unique display device identifier. The processor communicates the identifier/data pair to the transceiver, which in turn ultrasonically broadcasts the identifier and associated data to display devices within the broadcast range.

Double Acting Roller/Ball Clutch Gear

Double Acting Roller/Ball Clutch Gear

US Patent:
6070706, Jun 6, 2000
Filed:
Feb 3, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/243591
Inventors:
James Gabriel Brewington - Raleigh NC
Richard Hunter Harris - Raleigh NC
Jeff David Thomas - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
F16D 1102, F16D 2701
US Classification:
192 27
Abstract:
A gear mechanism containing a clutch assembly made of an outer member and an inner member wherein the rotation of the inner member is less than one revolution. The inner member has a chord surface, and when inserted in the outer member a wedge shaped space is created. Rolling elements are mounted in the wedge shaped space such that when there is rotation of one of the members, the rolling elements are driven into one of the corners of the wedge shaped space causing the inner member to rotate with the outer member. A protrusion at a fixed location is used to dislodge the rollers. With the rollers dislodged, the inner member ceases rotation. Four embodiments are disclosed. In the first embodiment, two magnetic rollers are used to provide an engagement mechanism between the rollers and the corner of the wedge shape. The second embodiment discloses a single magnetized roller. The third embodiment discloses a spring separator positioned perpendicular to the chord to position two non-magnetic rollers.

Shuttered Display Panel

Shuttered Display Panel

US Patent:
5115228, May 19, 1992
Filed:
Aug 2, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/561758
Inventors:
Richard H. Harris - Raleigh NC
Richard G. Minor - Wake Forest NC
Robert W. Price - Cary NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G09G 302
US Classification:
340716
Abstract:
The present invention accomplishes the above objects by employing a display having the capability to emit light and form images viewable from both the front and back of the display. The invention also shutters the images displayed on the front and back of the display so that the images can be correctly displayed depending on the viewpoint of the viewer. Text and images displayed such that they are seen from both the front and back of the display appear differently to the front and rear viewer. Electronic shutters are placed between the display and both the front and rear viewers so that they can be flashed on and off fast enough to provide a stable image appearing to each viewer. The shutters also flash slow enough so that display data can be rewritten to provide each viewer with a correct image. The correct image can be either the corrected image of that image seen by the opposing viewer, or a completely separate image. In this way, simultaneous images appear to both the front and rear viewer.

Apparatus, Method, And System For Positively Identifying An Item

US Patent:
7118026, Oct 10, 2006
Filed:
Jun 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/608872
Inventors:
Richard Hunter Harris - Raleigh NC, US
Lawrence Arthur Heyl - Raleigh NC, US
Hollis Phillip Posey - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 17/00, G06K 15/00, G06K 7/10
US Classification:
235375, 235378, 23546201, 186 59, 186 61, 705 16, 382183
Abstract:
A system, such as a checkout station, for positively identifying items includes a reader that reads coded information affixed to an item. The system further includes a capture module, such as a camera. The capture module captures a visual characteristic of the item to be identified, such as the color, size, shape, or texture of the item. The visual characteristic of the item is compared with visual characteristics of candidate items stored within a database. If multiple items within the database are associated with the item to be identified, the images of the candidate items may be displayed to a user. The user may then select the candidate item that most resembles the item to be identified. The coded information of the item being identified is then compared with coded information of the selected item within the database. If the coded information of both items corresponds, the item is positively identified and is accepted for purchase by a consumer.

Filed:
Aug 30, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/829039
Inventors:
Richard Hunter Harris - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H01H 1328
US Classification:
200 67A
Abstract:
A torsional or rocker switch actuator is described that uses the torsional moment of a buckling compression spring column to rock the actuator member on a pivot. A catastrophically buckling compression column spring is used and the reaction moment which occurs as the spring buckles is applied to rock an actuator back and forth between open and closed positions with cooperating contacts beneath the actuator. A non-teasible, snap action, tactile feedback, key mechanism of extreme mechanical simplicity and high reliability is achieved.

Linear Actuator

Linear Actuator

US Patent:
6879065, Apr 12, 2005
Filed:
Aug 4, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/633953
Inventors:
Richard Hunter Harris - Raleigh NC, US
Mark Leland Myers - Raleigh NC, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H02K041/00, H02K043/00
US Classification:
310 12, 310 20, 310 21, 310 29, 310 27, 74 8937, 74 8938, 74 8941, 192141, 192143
Abstract:
An improved linear actuator incorporates a DC motor whose stator is secured to a frame is provided for. To improve operational longevity and reliability of a linear actuator, the improved actuator includes a retention clutch and an axial load limiter. An axially configured retention clutch is configured to slidably fit within the open inner channel diameter of an axial load limiter and over a motor shaft of a linear actuator. In operation, the retention clutch reduces the impact loads on the stop and extending the fatigue life of these wearable components. Similarly, when the screw encounters axial loads during operation, these loads are distributed across both the axial load limiter and the motor, thereby reducing direct forces on the motor and contributing to an extended use of the motor component.
