Apparatus And Method For Mounting And Operating Multile Turbochargers In Parallel

US Patent:
5488827, Feb 6, 1996
Filed:
Oct 20, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/326596
Inventors:
Melvin J. Helmich - Mount Vernon OH
Richard C. Peoples - Grove City PA
Vaughn A. Squires - Grove City PA
Assignee:
Gas Research Institute - Chicago IL
International Classification:
F02B 3700
US Classification:
60612
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for establishing parallel flow to and from a plurality of turbochargers operating in parallel. The turbochargers are mounted on a manifold that has a high pressure chamber and a low pressure chamber. A plurality of turbines are mounted to the manifold so that each turbine inlet is in communication with the high pressure chamber and each turbine outlet is in communication with the low pressure chamber. Each turbine inlet is sized, shaped and positioned to accommodate a designed proportional mass flow rate to each corresponding turbine. A programmed logic controller and suitable control valve can be used to bypass a portion of the engine exhaust gas from the high pressure chamber directly to the low pressure chamber. The amount of bypassed engine exhaust gas can be controlled to vary the power output of turbines.

Method And System For Reciprocating Compressor Starting

US Patent:
2013028, Oct 24, 2013
Filed:
Apr 5, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/857334
Inventors:
Richard C. PEOPLES - Grove City PA, US
Jayaprakash Shreeshailappa SABARAD - Bangalore, IN
Jason M. STRODE - Lawrence Park PA, US
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F04B 49/00
US Classification:
417 1
Abstract:
Systems and methods of the invention may overcome a higher than normal starting torque for in a reciprocating, electric motor driven air compressor for a vehicle. A detection component can be configured to detect a stall condition for a reciprocating compressor based on a force from compressed air being compressed into a reservoir of the reciprocating compressor. Based upon the detected stall condition, a controller can reverse direction or increase torque to alleviate the stall condition. In the reverse direction mode, the controller component can change a direction of a piston rotation. In the torque increase mode, the controller increases a number of poles for the motor, a line voltage, or a volt/hertz.

RICHARD C. PEOPLES - GROVE CITY PA, US
MILAN KARUNARATNE - LAWRENCE PARK PA, US
JASON M. STRODE - LAWRENCE PARK PA, US
JAYAPRAKASH SHREESHAILAPPA SABARAD - BANGALORE, IN
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - SCHENECTADY NY
International Classification:
F04B 49/00
US Classification:
417 53, 417293
Abstract:
Systems and methods of the invention relate to monitoring a change in a rotational speed of a crankshaft to identify a failure related to a crankcase breather valve. A reciprocating compressor can include a detection component that is configured to track a rotational speed of a crankshaft of a compressor to identify a change in rotational speed. In an embodiment, the rotational speed can be monitored while unloaded and/or below approximiately 800 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). Based on a change in a rotational speed of the crankshaft, a controller can be configured to communicate an alert which corresponds to a failure related to the crankcase breather valve.

Combination Compressor Unloader

US Patent:
5735675, Apr 7, 1998
Filed:
Jul 25, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/505521
Inventors:
Richard Claude Peoples - Grove City PA
Daniel Lee Umbaugh - Slippery Rock PA
International Classification:
F04B 4902
US Classification:
417275
Abstract:
A combination compressor unloader which has a horizontal cylinder and a double acting piston forming two compression chambers. Each chamber communicates by a passageway with a supplementary chamber with each passageway associated with a reversible actuator having an attached unloader plug capable of sealing the passageway from a remote control. A second means is provided to form a reversible by pass that can deactivate at least one cylinder end of said double ended piston.
