A medical lavage apparatus (10) for body cavities, comprises a housing (20) having parallel irrigation and aspiration cylinders (28, 32) with plungers (24, 26) extending in bores thereof from a first end and aspiration and irrigation check valves positioned in parallel, smaller, offset, valve cylinders (46, 48) located at second ends. A septum (50) formed of intersecting semi-circular-in-cross-section baffles joins the adjacent outer ends of the irrigation and aspiration check valve cylinders so as to allow full fluid streams flowing from these outer ends to flow together at an angle. An oblong-in-cross-section, funnel-shaped, common exchange tube (22) is attached to the housing surrounding ends of both the irrigation and aspiration check valve cylinders and the septum. Inlet and outlet ports (42 and 44) are respectively positioned on the sides of the irrigation and aspiration cylinders with appropriate check valves located therein for coupling respectively to supply and waste containers (12, 16). When either of the plungers is fully inserted into its respective cylinder, a seal (80) on the end thereof covers the respective inlet or outlet port, thereby making that cylinder inoperative so as to avoid undesired fluid mixing between cylinders.

An indwelling urethral catheter sizing system comprises sets of substantially equal length indwelling urethral catheters (14) having various balloon spacings (a, b, c), from bladder balloons (2) to urethral anchoring cuff balloons (36). A method of implanting an indwelling urethral catheter from the sets involves first determining a patient's interballoon urethral segment length, from his bladder to his bulbous urethra immediately downstream of what remains of his prostate gland. A urethral sizing catheter having a balloon spacing corresponding to the interballoon urethral segment length is inserted in the patient to determine the clinical length of the patient's urethral tract from his bladder to his penile meatus. A male indwelling urethral catheter is then chosen from the sets having a balloon spacing corresponding to the patient's interballoon urethral segment length and the clinical length determined with the urethral sizing catheter. The urethral sizing catheter can be used for filling and voiding the bladder.

A removable lid (10) for an analytical specimen cup (12) of a type for defining a test space (26) with a chemical strip (24) mounted therein includes a selectively-removable protective cover (16) for selectively covering and uncovering an outer surface of a transparent portion of an outer partition (18) forming the test space. The protective cover is formed as one piece with an inner partition to be attached thereto by a dual living hinge (28a and b). The lid is rectangular in shape and includes an elongated magnifying lens (20) which has protrusions extending into blind holes (62) of the inner partition. The magnifying lens extends across the transparent portion of the outer partition. When the protective cover is in a closed position it impinges on the magnifying lens. A peel-off color analysis chart (22) is mounted on an inside surface of the protective cover.

An anchoring system for a urethral catheter (14, 36), and a method of its use, involve a resilient anchor-interval portion (40) of a catheter drainage shaft (42, 42'), positioned between a bladder balloon (26) and a urethral anchoring cuff balloon (44). The anchor-interval portion has a sinusoidal configuration lengthwise thereof which provide a proper linear elastic resilience for allowing the bladder balloon and the urethral anchoring cuff balloon to be separated a substantial distance for impinging against what remains of a prostate gland (20, 28, 32).
