Electrode And Core Arrangements For Polarization-Independent Waveguides

US Patent:
6795597, Sep 21, 2004
Filed:
Mar 15, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/098731
Inventors:
Richard William Ridgway - Westerville OH
David William Nippa - Dublin OH
Richard Davis - Columbus OH
Van Earl Wood - Delaware OH
Assignee:
Optimer Photonics, Inc. - Columbus OH
International Classification:
G02B 600
US Classification:
385 11, 385 14, 385 40
Abstract:
The present invention provides for polarization independence in electrooptic waveguides. Specifically, in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, an electrooptic waveguide for an optical signal is provided. The waveguide comprises a plurality of control electrodes, an optical waveguide core defining a primary axis of propagation, and an electrooptic cladding at least partially surrounding the core. The control electrodes are positioned to generate a contoured electric field across the cladding. The cladding is poled along a poling contour. The contoured electric field and/or the poling contour are asymmetric relative to a plane intersecting the waveguide core and extending along the primary axis of propagation. The electrooptic cladding defines at least two cladding regions on opposite sides of the waveguide core. The contoured electric field comprises (i) a vertical electric field component within a first one of said pair cladding regions that is larger than a vertical component in a second one of the cladding regions and (ii) a horizontal electric field component within the first cladding region that is smaller than a horizontal component in the second cladding region.

Coin Discriminating Apparatus

US Patent:
6340082, Jan 22, 2002
Filed:
Oct 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/422801
Inventors:
Larry J. House - Columbus OH
Richard J. Davis - Columbus OH
Assignee:
Japan Tobacco Inc. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G07D 508
US Classification:
194317, 194328
Abstract:
A coin discriminating apparatus which permits easy and reliable determination and identification of coins with the use of eddy currents induced in coins by an electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field varies depending on the material, thickness, etc. of the coin, and the impedance of the coil varies under the influence of the induced eddy current. Eddy current induction coils are successively excited to apply a high-frequency electromagnetic field to the coin over an entire surface thereof, and impedances of the eddy current induction coils, which vary under the influence of the eddy current induced in the coin by the high-frequency electromagnetic field, are measured to obtain information on surface displacement irregularities of a stamp pattern on the coin surface. Also, a low-frequency electromagnetic field is applied to the coin by using the eddy current induction coils, and impedances of the individual coils, which vary under the influence of the eddy current induced in the coin by the low-frequency electromagnetic field, are measured to obtain information on the material of the coin and to perform coin discrimination. Features of the stamp pattern in particular, which are represented by surface displacement irregularities, are acquired in the form of a histogram showing impedance along the abscissa and the numbers of coils along the ordinate with outputs in specified ranges along the ordinate.

Rotating Magnet-Induced Current Pipeline Inspection Tool And Method

US Patent:
2006016, Jul 27, 2006
Filed:
May 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/129087
Inventors:
J. Nestleroth - Westerville OH, US
Richard Davis - Columbus OH, US
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Columbus OH
International Classification:
G01N 27/72
US Classification:
324326000
Abstract:
Disclosed are an apparatus and method for integrity monitoring of tubular components and, in particular, pipe walls. The apparatus comprises a configuration of permanent magnets arranged to rotate circumferentially within the pipe, whereby uniform low-frequency currents are generated within the pipe wall which, in turn, generate fields detectable with, for example, conventional Hall Effect sensors. The method comprises steps to rotate the apparatus within the pipeline and sense disruptions caused by anomalies in the pipe wall.

Pipeline Inspection Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
2006007, Apr 13, 2006
Filed:
Oct 7, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/960739
Inventors:
John Nestleroth - Westerville OH, US
Richard Davis - Columbus OH, US
Ronnie Galliher - Baltimore OH, US
George Brand - Columbus OH, US
International Classification:
G01N 27/72
US Classification:
324220000
Abstract:
A apparatus for pipeline integrity monitoring comprising a magnetically permeable backing bar and at least three magnets comprising a relatively medium-strength magnet positioned at one end of the backing bar, a relatively low-strength magnet positioned at the other end of the backing bar, and a relative high-strength magnet positioned between the medium-strength and the low-strength magnet. The at least three magnets are adapted and positioned to induce a plurality of resultant fields within the pipeline wall comprising a first resultant field suitable for detecting a reduced metal-related anomaly and a second resultant field suitable for detecting a mechanically worked-related anomaly. Preferably, the first resultant field has a strength greater than 120 Oersted and the second resultant field has a strength between 40 and 80 Oersted.
