Treatment Of Neurological Disorders Via Electrical Stimulation, And Methods Related Thereto

US Patent:
2011013, Jun 9, 2011
Filed:
Jan 2, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/319158
Inventors:
Harry Lee - Boston MA, US
Allan Foreman - Epping NH, US
Wolfgang Daum - Groton MA, US
Richard Cohen - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Jean Gotman - Westmount, CA
Andrew James Cole - Lincoln MA, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/37
US Classification:
607 62
Abstract:
Disclosed are medical devices for the prevention and/or treatment of neurological disorders via electrical stimulation, and methods related thereto. The devices may also be utilized to detect disorders before the prevention or treatment of a neurological disorder. These devices are minimally or non-invasive. The present medical devices comprise various components, which include electrodes and control electronics. The electrodes are targeting electrodes constructed from ring type structures or virtually connected disc type arrays. The electrodes are located entirely outside the skull. The present medical devices also comprise one or more subsystems, a control system, a battery unit, and wires connecting the one or more subsystems. These devices may also be used for acute seizure control.

Method For Estimating Changes Of Cardiovascular Indices Using Peripheal Arterial Blood Pressure Waveform

US Patent:
2010007, Mar 25, 2010
Filed:
Sep 21, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/563469
Inventors:
Richard Jonathan Cohen - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Kichang Lee - Newton-Highland MA, US
Tatsuya Arai - Arlington MA, US
International Classification:
A61B 5/021
US Classification:
600485
Abstract:
The systems and methods described herein enable reliable estimation of cardiovascular indices on real-time, non-invasive or minimally-invasive, and beat-to-beat basis. Cardiovascular indices which can be estimated include), stroke volume (SV), without being limited to, cardiac output (CO and total peripheral resistance (TPR). In various embodiments, one or more of these indices are estimated continuously, on a beat-to-beat basis, using peripheral arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms and certain parameters derived from the peripheral ABP waveforms. The derived parameters are substantially insensitive to distortions of the ABP waveform arising from tapered arterial branches throughout the arterial tree. The methods described herein can provide a more accurate and reliable estimate of hemodynamic parameters than existing techniques.

Method For Measuring Physiological Stress

US Patent:
2010011, May 6, 2010
Filed:
Oct 11, 2007
Appl. No.:
12/445139
Inventors:
Richard J. Cohen - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Danilo Scepanovic - Cambridge MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
A61B 5/02
US Classification:
600301
Abstract:
Method for determining physiological stress. One or more physiologic signals in a subject is detected. The one or more physiologic signals are processed to obtain one or more processed signals. The subject's stress level is estimated from the one or more processed signals. The one or more physiological signals may include the electrocardiogram, instantaneous lung volume or other signal reflecting respiratory activity, or the arterial blood pressure or other signal reflecting cardiovascular activity.

Method And Apparatus For Treatment Of Cardiac Tachyarrhythmias

US Patent:
8249704, Aug 21, 2012
Filed:
Jul 26, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/493466
Inventors:
Antonis A. Armoundas - Cambridge MA, US
Richard J. Cohen - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
A61N 1/00
US Classification:
607 14, 607 18, 607 25
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for preventing heart rhythm disturbances by recording cardiac electrical activity, measuring beat-to-beat variability in the morphology of electrocardiographic waveforms, and using the measured beat-to-beat variability to control the delivery of electrical impulses to the heart during the absolute refractory period.
