Flattened Profile Diesel Engine Exhaust Oxidizer

US Patent:
5097665, Mar 24, 1992
Filed:
Aug 30, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/574890
Inventors:
Refaat A. Kammel - Jackson MI
International Classification:
F01N 302
US Classification:
60275
Abstract:
A flattened profile emission oxidizing device for removing soot and other particulates from the exhaust gases of a diesel engine having an enclosure with a forward inlet for receiving diesel engine exhaust, a main flow path through the enclosure, a bypass through the enclosure for diverting flow from the main flow path, and a control means for selectively controlling the flow through the main flow path and the bypass in accordance with certain sensed conditons relating to the status of engine operation and the condition of a particulate trapping medium that is disposed in the main flow path. The main flow path has an electrostatic precipitator that is disposed in underlying relationship to the particulate trapping medium in the main flow path and a series of vanes are disposed in underlying relationship to the electrostatic precipitator and serve to redirect the exhaust flow passing through the main flow path and distribute the exhaust flow over the electrostatic precipitator and the trapping medium. A thermal stabilizer in the outlet of the device attenuates the peak temperatures of the exhaust gases.

Diesel Engine Exhaust Oxidizer

US Patent:
4969328, Nov 13, 1990
Filed:
Nov 1, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/265547
Inventors:
Refaat A. Kammel - Jackson MI
International Classification:
F01N 302
US Classification:
60275
Abstract:
A device for collecting and removing particulate emissions from diesel engine exhaust before the exhaust is discharged into the atmosphere. The device comprises an enclosure having an inlet, an outlet, a main flow path, containing a medium for trapping and removing particulate material, a by-pass for diverting the exhaust flow around the main flow path, a heating unit to initiate forced regeneration of the medium and a control system for regulating the forced regeneration of the medium and the flow through the main and by-pass flow paths. In a first aspect of the invention the regeneration of the medium and the flow through the main and by-pass flow paths are regulated by a pair of valves, a thermocouple, engine sensors, and a back-pressure switch. In a second aspect of the invention, a single valve and microcomputer are used in place of the pair of valves and in conjunction with the thermocouple regulate the flow through the main and by-pass flow paths and the regeneration of medium. In a third aspect, a compact enclosure is provided for installations where space is limited.

Jun 5, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/758654
Inventors:
Refaat Kammel - Jackson MI, US
International Classification:
F01N 5/04, F01N 3/10, F02B 33/44, F02G 3/00, B60K 6/20, B60W 20/00
US Classification:
60280, 60299, 60301, 60607, 60624, 180 6521, 180 6528, 903905, 903907
Abstract:
A combined diesel gas-turbine system for optimizing operation and combustion processes of a diesel engine includes a catalytic sub-system, a turbo-generator sub-system and a hybrid sub-system. The catalytic sub-system is in communication with an exhaust port of the diesel engine and is operative for combusting and reducing all pollutants from diesel exhaust. The catalytic sub-system is a three-way catalytic converter and a first catalytic converter in series with a second catalytic converter. The turbo-generator sub-system is operative for the reclamation of secondary energy from the catalytic sub-system and includes a turbine in communication with the second catalytic converter for receiving a source of cleaned exhaust gas to drive the turbine. The hybrid sub-system is operative for the management of energy within the system. The system may incorporate a waste heat recovery system and convert it to mechanical power.

System And Method For The Processing And Incineration Of Diesel Exhaust Particulate Matter

US Patent:
7976801, Jul 12, 2011
Filed:
May 23, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/596110
Inventors:
Refaat Kammel - Jackson MI, US
International Classification:
B01D 46/00, B01D 53/56, B01D 53/94, F01N 3/10
US Classification:
423212, 4232132, 4232135, 4232155, 423DIG 6, 422105, 60274, 60282, 60299
Abstract:
A particulate converter for the collection and the incineration of particulate matters from diesel engine exhaust includes an exhaust path extending from the diesel engine through the particulate converter. The particulate converter further includes a housing and at least one candle located in the housing. An electrical incineration system may be electrically connected to a pulsed power supply for incinerating soot collected within the candle. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) may be disposed in the exhaust path to generate sufficient amount of NOto assist in incineration. At least one exhaust cooling device may be provided for the control of exhaust temperature. A feedback control system may control exhaust gas temperatures based on pressure drop across the DPC, temperature ahead of the DPC and engine RPM.
