Nuclear Fuel Assembly Bottom Nozzle Plate

US Patent:
5009839, Apr 23, 1991
Filed:
Sep 4, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/577384
Inventors:
Raymond A. King - Lynchburg VA
Assignee:
B&W Fuel Company - Lynchburg VA
International Classification:
G21C 1930, G21C 330, G21C 1500
US Classification:
376352
Abstract:
A bottom nozzle plate for a fuel assembly in a nuclear reactor. The bottom nozzle plate is formed from a rigid substantially square plate having legs adapted to be positioned on the lower core plate of the reactor for supporting the fuel assembly above coolant inlet openings in the core plate. The rigid square plate has two types of coolant flow holes therethrough. The first flow holes are grouped in clusters of four to define a square pattern relative to the sides of the plate such that the width of the sections of the plate between the flow holes in each cluster is less than the width of the sections of the plate between the clusters of four holes. Each of the second flow holes is formed in an irregular pattern to define a substantially clover leaf shape. The second flow holes are positioned so as to be above the coolant inlet openings in the core plate when the bottom nozzle plate is installed in the reactor.

Control Component Retainer

US Patent:
4304631, Dec 8, 1981
Filed:
Jul 2, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/053862
Inventors:
Lewis A. Walton - Lynchburg VA
Raymond A. King - Lynchburg VA
Assignee:
The Babcock & Wilcox Company - New Orleans LA
International Classification:
G21C 708
US Classification:
376327
Abstract:
A retainer to provide supplemental holddown force for a control component assembly latched into a fuel assembly of a nuclear reactor. Upon failure of latching mechanism the retainer precludes the ejection of the control component assembly from the fuel assembly by the upward coolant flow drage force. The spring loaded retainer is mounted at the top of the control component assembly and engages both the control component assembly and the core grid plate to form a structural blocking of the grid plate hole thereby precluding the ejection of the control component assembly therethrough.

Spacer Grid Cell Fixture System

US Patent:
5406599, Apr 11, 1995
Filed:
Apr 8, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/225038
Inventors:
Garrett Johnson - Gladstone VA
Raymond A. King - Lynchburg VA
Elbert C. Minnick - Forest VA
Assignee:
B&W Fuel Company - Lynchburg VA
International Classification:
G21C 2100
US Classification:
376260
Abstract:
A weld fixture for receiving and aligning the fuel rod contact points of a nuclear fuel bundle spacer grid. Two plates are provided with intersecting unequally spaced slots that define polygons on one side of each plate. Both plates have bores therethrough substantially at the slot intersections and in the slots adjacent the outer edges of the plates. Bores are provided through both plates in polygons that correspond to fuel assembly guide tube and instrument tube locations. These positions receive guide cell pins during use, some of which are hollow and are used to bolt the plates together over the spacer grid strips. Bores in each plate through the defined polygons receive alignment pins. Guide rods receive and align the plates through corner bores in each plate. The slots and pins in the facing plates align the critical fuel rod contact points in the spacer grid during the intersection welding process.

Mid Span Mixer Grid

US Patent:
5339341, Aug 16, 1994
Filed:
Sep 17, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/123419
Inventors:
Raymond A. King - Lynchburg VA
David A. Farnsworth - Lynchburg VA
Jerome S. D'Orio - Forest VA
Assignee:
B&W Fuel Company - Lynchburg VA
International Classification:
G21C 334
US Classification:
376439
Abstract:
A mixer grid for a nuclear reactor fuel assembly has a plurality of strips arranged in interlocking rows and columns defining a plurality of cells. A stopper is fixed to each corner of each cell for both directing coolant flow, providing coolant mixing and providing a smooth contact surface for the fuel rod. The stopper is either cone-shaped or cylindrical for directing and channeling coolant flow. The stopper also has a smooth, flat chamfered surface for contacting the fuel rod and minimizing damage upon the shifting of the fuel rod. The grid is attached to the nuclear reactor fuel assembly by using guide cells comprising a plurality of support arches for welding to the nuclear reactor fuel assembly.
