Vibration Isolating Lighting Pole Bracket Arm

US Patent:
5601274, Feb 11, 1997
Filed:
Jun 13, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/489717
Inventors:
Ray C. Minor - Abingdon VA
Phillip R. Shaffer - Abingdon VA
Assignee:
Kearney-National, Inc. - White Plains NY
International Classification:
F16M 1300
US Classification:
248594
Abstract:
A lighting pole bracket arm isolates vibrations that would otherwise pass through the lighting pole and into a lighting fixture mounted on the lighting pole. The bracket arm includes an upper member which is pivotally mounted to the lighting pole and a lower telescopic member, which is pivotally mounted to the lighting pole at a position below the upper member pivotal mount. The lower telescopic member includes an inner tube that is slidably received within an outer tube. A cylindrical oil-free sleeve bearing is press fit over the end of the inner tube that is received within the outer tube, and a second cylindrical oil-free sleeve bearing is press fit into the end of the outer tube that fits over the inner tube. A coil spring is housed within the outer tube between a closed end of the outer tube opposite from the end having the sleeve bearing and the end of the inner tube slidably received within the outer tube. The combination of the coil spring and the sleeve bearings results in a damping of any vibrations passed through the lower member from the lighting pole to the lighting fixture.

Method And Apparatus For Startup Of A Hydrostatic Transmission

US Patent:
4624333, Nov 25, 1986
Filed:
Aug 30, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/645590
Inventors:
Ray C. Minor - Abingdon VA
Assignee:
New Holland, Inc. - New Holland PA
International Classification:
B62D 1102
US Classification:
180 648
Abstract:
An improved method and apparatus for the cold weather startup of a hydrostatic transmission in a skid-steer loader is disclosed wherein the flow of hydraulic fluid is directed through the hydraulic system for operating the work implement to heat up the hydraulic fluid before being directed into the hydrostatic transmission prior to engaging the drive to the transmission. By disconnecting the drive between the engine and the hydrostatic transmission, the fluid in the hydrostatic transmission can be warmed before engaging the drive to reduce the startup problems due to inherent resistances of cold hydrostatic transmissions. Utilization of the hydraulic control valve for controlling the operation of the work implement to direct the flow of hydraulic fluid over a relief valve built therein permits the hydraulic fluid to be heated quickly.

Handhole Reinforcing Frame For Round Utility Poles

US Patent:
7157642, Jan 2, 2007
Filed:
Aug 23, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/208538
Inventors:
Joseph Manuel Bowman - Abingdon VA, US
Ray Carl Minor - Abingdon VA, US
Assignee:
Hapco Aluminum Pole Products - Abingdon VA
International Classification:
H02G 7/20
US Classification:
174 45R, 174 50, 174 37, 174 40 R, 248200
Abstract:
A frame for reinforcing a handhole of a round metallic utility pole, includes a generally elliptical body defining a major axis and a minor axis and forming a generally elliptical outer periphery, and a generally elliptical inner periphery bordering an opening extending through front and back sides of the body, the opening defining a center axis of the frame. A flange is formed integrally with the body and projects forwardly therefrom at a location spaced inwardly from the outer periphery, wherein the flange is separated from the outer periphery by a forwardly facing shoulder surface of the body. The flange includes an outer flank facing outwardly and intersecting the shoulder surface, wherein the flange outer flank forms an oblique angle with the center axis as seen in a sectional view taken along the major axis, and lies substantially parallel to the center axis as seen in a sectional view taken along the minor axis.

Weldless Pole Mounting Structure And Method Of Providing Same

US Patent:
2003019, Oct 23, 2003
Filed:
Apr 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/126657
Inventors:
Joseph Bowman - Abingdon VA, US
Ray Minor - Abingdon VA, US
International Classification:
E02D027/32
US Classification:
052/295000, 052/726400, 362/431000, 052/731400
Abstract:
A hollow pole having a flared lower end is matingly mounted in a base flange fitted over, and in facing contact with, the flared end portion of the pole and having a tubular wedge matingly fitted in the flared end of the pole so that the pole is bonded to the tubular wedge and the base flange solely by galling action. The assembly is effected by using relatively soft aluminum alloy from which the components are made but which is heat treated prior to assembly to increase hardness and tensile strength so that assembly of the pole, tubular wedge and base flange results in a galling action providing the sole bonding of the pole to the other parts.

Pole Vibration Damping Apparatus

US Patent:
7871186, Jan 18, 2011
Filed:
Apr 2, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/730532
Inventors:
Ray Carl Minor - Abingdon VA, US
Assignee:
Kearney-National, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
B60Q 1/00
US Classification:
362369, 362390
Abstract:
A highway lighting apparatus includes a lighting fixture, and a vibration damper. The vibration damper includes a housing having a ball chamber, the chamber being of square shape. One or two vibration damping balls are mounted in the chamber for independent free rolling movement therein. If two balls are used, the ball diameter is shorter than one-half of each of the four chamber sides. If the damper is used on a pole having a side-mounted light fixture, the housing would include a downwardly open socket receiving the top end of the pole, with a center axis of the pole coinciding with respective center axes of the chamber and the socket. In the case where the damper is used on a pole having a top-mounted light fixture, the damper would be mounted below the light fixture on a side of the pole.

Filed:
Jan 25, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/657673
Inventors:
Joseph M. Bowman - Abingdon VA, US
Ray Carl Minor - Abingdon VA, US
Assignee:
Kearney-National Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
A47B 91/00, A47G 29/00, B65D 19/00
US Classification:
24834601, 24834603, 248519
Abstract:
A breakaway transformer base for a lighting pole includes four upstanding corner members (preferably formed of aluminum castings), and four side sheets. Each side sheet is attached to two of the corner members, e. g. , by welds or fasteners, thereby interconnecting the corner members. Each corner member forms bolt holes for enabling the base to be bolted to a lighting standard and to an anchored foundation.
