Gastric Volume Filling Construct

Gastric Volume Filling Construct

US Patent:
2011029, Dec 1, 2011
Filed:
Mar 2, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/039067
Inventors:
Gavin Braithwaite - Cambridge MA, US
Martin van Buren - Chelmsford MA, US
Stephen Spiegelberg - Winchester MA, US
Shantanu Gaur - Canonsburg PA, US
Samuel Levy - Columbus OH, US
Jonathan Wecker - Weston MA, US
Ram Chuttani - Dover MA, US
International Classification:
A61M 29/04
US Classification:
606191
Abstract:
The technology described herein provides methods for addressing obesity by introducing a device into the stomach. Embodiments of a device for treating obesity may comprise a shaped membrane construct that contains a swellable material. The construct may be contained within a capsule which is ingested by a patient. When the capsule dissolves in the stomach, the gastric secretions may diffuse through the membrane and spontaneously swell the internal material, which swells and stiffens the construct sufficiently to create a sensation of satiety by both filling gastric volume and by distending the walls of the stomach. The volume of the construct may be sufficient to prevent passage through the pyloric sphincter. After a set period of time or after the administration of a degradation formulation, the device may structurally degrade to allow passage through the pyloric sphincter and eventual passage from the body.

Assignee:
ndo Surgical, Inc., a Massachusetts corporation
International Classification:
A61B017/08
US Classification:
604/222000, 606/153000
Abstract:
A medical instrument for engaging tissue includes a flexible shaft, a tissue piercing coil at a distal portion of the shaft, and a tissue stabilizer positioned over the shaft and biased in a distal direction such that as the tissue piercing coil enters tissue, the tissue stabilizer is urged against a surface of the tissue. A medical instrument for reconfiguring tissue includes a flexible shaft defining a lumen housing actuating controls, and a distal actuating assembly with a sealing portion configured to substantially seal the shaft lumen from contact with bodily fluids. A cartridge assembly includes first and second members configured for releasable attachment to a medical instrument, and a holder configured to receive the first and second members and to be released from the first and second members upon action of the first and second members attaching to the medical instrument.

Method And Devices For Tissue Reconfiguration

US Patent:
2003005, Mar 20, 2003
Filed:
Jul 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/197574
Inventors:
Michael Laufer - Menlo Park CA, US
Jeffrey Cerier - Franklin MA, US

Randal Chinnock - Sturbridge MA, US
International Classification:
A61B017/08
US Classification:
606/153000
Abstract:
A method includes advancing an apparatus having an elongated member transorally into the stomach. The apparatus includes a distal end effector having first and second members configured to engage tissue. The first and second members are movable relatively toward one another generally in a first plane. The method includes moving the distal end effector relative to the elongated member in the first plane such that the distal end effector is retroflexed out of alignment with the elongated member to position the first and second members for engagement with the tissue. At least one of the first and second members carries a fixation device for fixing engaged portions of tissue together.
