Spring Energized Debris Barrier For Mechanically Set Retrievable Packer

US Patent:
7604048, Oct 20, 2009
Filed:
Nov 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/602686
Inventors:
Edward J. Kossa - Huffman TX, US
Rafael Ramirez - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 23/06
US Classification:
166179, 166119, 166191
Abstract:
A debris barrier for a retrievable mechanical set packer is held retracted for run in. It is held spaced apart from upper slips and uses a spring bias that acts on the slips to keep them energized to also energize the barrier to the extended position to keep debris out of the upper slips when the packer is set. The debris barrier is preferably a sleeve that is axially compressed by the setting procedure to increase in diameter and span the gap between the packer mandrel and the set upper slips. Retrieving the packer is enabled by a retraction of the debris barrier as the upper slips are undermined with rotation and pickup force on the packer mandrel. The lack of a debris barrier could prevent retrieval of the packer in well bores where debris is present and has a tendency to settle around and more critically under the upper slips.

Ball Tray Organizer For Subterranean Complex Completions

US Patent:
8157090, Apr 17, 2012
Filed:
Oct 23, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/605055
Inventors:
Donald F. Ingvardsen - Spring TX, US
Rafael Ramirez - Houston TX, US
David B. Ruddock - Pearland TX, US
Michael J. Naquin - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
B65D 85/00
US Classification:
2063159, 206562, 206563, 206499, 211 14
Abstract:
An organization system for a series of objects to be sequentially run downhole is disclosed. The preferred objects are spheres of progressively larger diameter put into a wellbore to land at discrete locations for operation of ports in a given sequence so that a specific producing zone or zones can be completed in increments that preferably go in an uphole direction as progressively larger spheres are inserted. In the preferred embodiment the process is fracturing where a series of ported subs are operated to selectively open for the fracture procedure at a specific location and then close or become isolated when another sphere is dropped. Optionally the balls can be recovered at the surface when production starts. The organizer prevents size confusion and gives a ready feedback as to the progress of a given job. Trays can be stacked and carried in a carrying case.

Energized Thermoplastic Sealing Element And Method Of Use

US Patent:
7360590, Apr 22, 2008
Filed:
Apr 29, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/118013
Inventors:
Edward Kossa - Huffman TX, US
Rafael Ramirez - Houston TX, US
Richard P. Rubbo - Woodlands TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33/128
US Classification:
166119, 166196, 277342
Abstract:
A packer element for use in forming a fluid pressure barrier within a wellbore. The packer element uses a thermoplastic component to accomplish the seal against the interior diameter of a surrounding tubular and an energizing component that is preferably formed of elastomeric material. The thermoplastic component of the packer element provides a sealing surface and defines an energizing chamber within. An energizing chamber is defined within the thermoplastic component and contains energizing elements that, when axially compressed, will urge the sealing surface of the thermoplastic component into sealing engagement with the surrounding tubular.

Rafael Ramirez - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
F16J 15/52
US Classification:
277636, 277323
Abstract:
An annular seal device includes a mandrel, at least one cone axially moveable on the mandrel, at least one sealing element having a frustoconical outer surface and a frustoconical inner surface, at least one contact feature at the at least one cone and operably engageable with the at least one sealing element, and at least one of a blocking element and a resilient member at the mandrel, the at least one of a blocking element and a resilient member supporting a blocking surface in opposition to the at least one contact feature. The resilient member itself includes a tubular body having spring rings at axial ends thereof, and a plurality of beams extending spirally from one axial end to the other axial end.
