Third Place in BEA 2013 Student Research Competition
Research with Alaina Cordes sought to understand the relationship between social media and perceived anxiety. By surveying 105 people regarding their social media use and reactions, we quantitatively analyzed the correlations between the two. By using a modified Sports Anxiety Scale and uses and gratifications theory, we identified four specific anxiety factors and determined that there was a positive and significant association between anxiety and the participants' desire to establish status and credibility through social media and the desire to obtain information. Our research paper was accepted to BEA's 2013 Research Symposium on "Media and the Social Life: The Self, Relationships, and Society".
