Process For Removing Oxygen And Nitrogen From Crude Argon

US Patent:
RE34595, May 3, 1994
Filed:
Mar 6, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/847968
Inventors:
Michael S. K. Chen - Zionsville PA
Philip J. Cook - Schnecksville PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
B01D 5322, B01D 7102
US Classification:
95 54
Abstract:
[. A process is provided for purifying argon gas, especially an argon gas stream obtained by cryogenically separating air, wherein the argon gas is heated and compressed, and then permeated through a solid electrolyte membrane selective to the permeation of oxygen over other components of the gas, and removing oxygen from the argon by selective permeation of oxygen through the membrane. The purified argon can then be distilled to remove other components such as nitrogen. ]. Iadd. A process is provided for producing a purified argon stream wherein oxygen and nitrogen are removed from crude bulk argon streams, particularly those produced by cryogenic, adsorptive or membrane separation of air. The process comprises separating a heated, compressed crude argon stream containing nitrogen and oxygen into an oxygen permeate stream and an oxygen-depleted argon stream by passing the compressed heated argon stream through a solid electrolyte membrane selective to the permeation of oxygen. The oxygen-depleted argon stream is then fed to a distillation column to separate nitrogen from the oxygen-depleted argon stream to form the purified argon stream and a nitrogen waste stream. . Iaddend.

Reliquefaction Of Boil-Off From Liquefied Natural Gas

US Patent:
4846862, Jul 11, 1989
Filed:
Sep 6, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/241158
Inventors:
Philip J. Cook - Schnecksville PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F25J 100
US Classification:
62 9
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an improved process for the reliquefaction of boil-off gas containing up to 10% nitrogen resulting from the evaporation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) contained in a storage vessel. In the process, a closed-loop refrigeration cycle is utilized wherein an isenthalpically expanded stream is warmed against an initially cooled boil-off stream. The boil-off LNG stream is initially cooled by indirect heat exchange with an isentropically expanded refrigerant stream.

Elevated Pressure Phthalic Anhydride Process

US Patent:
5210223, May 11, 1993
Filed:
Jun 17, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/899797
Inventors:
Michael S. Chen - Zionsville PA
Philip J. Cook - Schnecksville PA
Harold H. Gunardson - New Tripoli PA
Melinda B. Ulrich - Annandale NJ
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C07D30789
US Classification:
549247
Abstract:
The present invention is an improvement to the conventional process for the production of phthalic anhydride. In particular, the present invention enables the crude phthalic anhydride product to be recovered in a more efficient manner.
