Philosophy:
My style of therapy is collaborative. I try to combine my clinical expertise and experience with clients' values and personal wisdom about what "works" for him/her. I recognize that some clients feel "lost" and need direction and I am willing to generate "here and now" steps that can be taken towards a solution. I also know that clients have strengths and problem-solving ability within them that is temporarily blocked and needs to be accessed. When past experiences contribute to current distress, many clients find it helpful to discuss and re-evaluate those events in ways that reduce self-judgment and promote healing. But "telling one's story" does not always lead to change in the present and must be combined with brainstorming new ways to behave, setting up structures that promote those new behaviors, and eliminating obstacles to change.
Many clients have told me that they feel comfortable with me, and experience me as a "real person", not just a professional.
