Method And Apparatus For Minimizing Slider Fly Heights Over Patterned Media

Method And Apparatus For Minimizing Slider Fly Heights Over Patterned Media

US Patent:
6563673, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Sep 11, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/952122
Inventors:
Michael D. Mundt - Longmont CO
Mark A. Chapin - Boulder CO
Gary E. Bement - Frederick CO
Brian D. Denker - Rogers CO
Paul M. Jones - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 582
US Classification:
360135, 360 7705, 360 7708
Abstract:
A patterned magnetic storage medium has a plurality of data sectors separated by respective servo sectors with each servo sector having a pattern of pits representing servo data. Grooves in each data sector separate adjacent tracks. Non-uniform structures patterns the grooves to a model of minimum or zero fly height perturbations of a slider adjacent the medium. The non-uniform structures preferably include lands pseudo-randomly spaced along each groove to form segmented grooves of pseudo-random length, with the lands being pseudo-randomly positioned across the data sector. In other embodiments, the servo sectors have lengths along each track to define a null frequency that matches a pitch frequency of modulation of a slider due to the pits of the servo sectors.

Earl Johns - Sewickley PA, US
Paul Jones - Pittsburgh PA, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
H01L021/31
US Classification:
438/780000
Abstract:
A method of fabricating a device comprising: depositing a self-assembled monolayer on a substrate; depositing a layer of surfactant coated nanostructured materials onto the self-assembled monolayer; and irradiating the layer of surfactant coated nanostructured materials and the self-assembled monolayer to bond nanostructured materials in the layer of surfactant coated nanostructured materials to the self-assembled monolayer. The method can be used to produce immobilized layers and/or patterned layers of nanostructured materials. Devices fabricated according to the method are also included.

Lubricant For Data Sensing Interface And Method Of Lubrication

Lubricant For Data Sensing Interface And Method Of Lubrication

US Patent:
2009024, Oct 1, 2009
Filed:
Mar 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/055803
Inventors:
Paul Max Jones - Pittsburgh PA, US
Corina Nistorica - San Jose CA, US
Yiao Tee Hsia - Wexford PA, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 3/00
US Classification:
369173
Abstract:
A data sensing interface comprising a surface of a recording medium and a tip of a data sensor positioned to sense data stored on the recording medium and a layer of polyphenyl ether disposed between the tip and the surface to function as a lubricant. A method of reducing wear within the data sensing interface includes providing a layer of polyphenyl ether between the tip of the data sensor and the surface of the recording medium to act as a lubricant.

Magnetic Recording System With Continuous Lubrication Of Recording Media

Magnetic Recording System With Continuous Lubrication Of Recording Media

US Patent:
2006009, May 11, 2006
Filed:
Nov 5, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/982370
Inventors:
Paul Jones - Pittsburgh PA, US
James Kiely - Sewickley PA, US
Lei Li - Wexford PA, US
Ibrahim Sendur - Pittsburgh PA, US
Yiao-Tee Hsia - Wexford PA, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/65, G11B 11/00
US Classification:
428835800, 428835600, 428835700, 428843300, 428825100, 369013350, 369013560
Abstract:
The present invention provides a self lubricating magnetic recording system that delivers lubricant molecules from a gas phase to the surface of recording media at a sufficient rate to cover the exposed media before it can interact with the writing transducer. The environment around the media surface includes lubricant vapor, and when the lubricant film is removed from the disc surface, e.g., upon heating of the medium, it is replaced by adsorption from the surrounding vapor. The lubricant is thus replenished by delivering lubricant from the vapor phase.
