Upright Vacuum Cleaner With Cyclonic Airflow

Upright Vacuum Cleaner With Cyclonic Airflow

US Patent:
6848146, Feb 1, 2005
Filed:
Jul 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/622897
Inventors:
Michael F. Wright - Stow OH, US
Charles J. Thur - Mentor OH, US
Brett Latimer - Mentor OH, US
Paul D. Stephens - Cleveland Heights OH, US
Mark E. Cipolla - Chardon OH, US
Craig J. Barbeck - North Royalton OH, US
Assignee:
Royal Appliance Mfg. Co. - Glenwillow OH
International Classification:
A47L 916
US Classification:
15353, 15350, 15352, 55429, 55DIG 3
Abstract:
A vacuum cleaner includes a first housing defining a cyclonic airflow chamber and a second housing defining a main suction opening that is in communication with an inlet of the cyclonic chamber. A suction source has a suction airstream inlet in communication with an outlet of the cyclonic chamber, and establishes a suction airstream that enters said main suction opening, passes through said cyclonic chamber, and passes to an outlet of said suction source. A substantial portion of particulates entrained in the suction airstream are separated therefrom when said suction airstream moves in a cyclonic fashion through the cyclonic chamber. A main filter assembly, preferably including filter medium comprising polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), is located in the cyclonic chamber so that a suction airstream moving from the main suction opening to the inlet of said suction source by way of the cyclonic airflow chamber passes through the filter medium thereof after said airstream moves in a cyclonic fashion within the cyclonic airflow chamber to remove residual particulates from the suction airstream before it leaves the cyclonic chamber. A HEPA filter can be provided to filter the suction airstream exhausted through the outlet of the suction source prior to the airstream being discharged from the vacuum.

Method For Manufacturing A Bucket For A Wet/Dry Vacuum Cleaner

US Patent:
5535500, Jul 16, 1996
Filed:
Jun 13, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/489965
Inventors:
Paul D. Stephens - Cleveland Heights OH
Michael F. Wright - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Robert A. Matousek - Lakewood OH
David M. Brickner - Lyndhurst OH
Assignee:
Royal Appliance Mfg. Co. - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B29C 6506, B29C 6558
US Classification:
29453
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a bucket of a wet/dry vacuum cleaner includes the step of producing a one piece conical shell with an open top end and an open bottom end. The shell is tapered such that its bottom end has a larger diameter than its top end. A base plate is also produced. Subsequently, the base plate is secured to the shell to close the shell bottom end and form a bucket. An aperture may extend through the shell and a hose inlet can be snapped to the shell through the aperture therein. A latch handle can be snapped to a latch mounting wall of the shell and a handle can be secured to the shell as well. The shell can also include an integral skirt in which are formed caster housings as well as a tool storage cavity.

Airflow Indicator

Airflow Indicator

US Patent:
6467123, Oct 22, 2002
Filed:
Jun 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/590088
Inventors:
David Di Nunzio - Mentor OH
Paul D. Stephens - Cleveland Heights OH
Charles Thur - Mentor OH
Michael F. Wright - Stow OH
Victor R. Younger - Parma OH
Assignee:
Royal Appliance Mfg. Co. - Glenwillow OH
International Classification:
A47L 900
US Classification:
15339, 15347
Abstract:
An airflow indicator for a vacuum cleaner includes a housing, a wheel chamber defined in the housing, and a rotatable wheel mounted in the wheel chamber. The wheel has protrusions which cause the wheel to rotate due to inlet air flow. The wheel further has markings which gradually increase in size along an outside perimeter of the wheel. The markings indicate movement of the wheel. An air inlet is formed adjacent a first end of the housing. An air passageway is formed within the housing adjacent the rotatable wheel and the air inlet. The air passageway is curved to facilitate air flow along the protrusions of the wheel. A valve is mounted within the housing adjacent the air passageway. The valve has a cross slit which opens in response to a change in vacuum pressure. An air outlet is formed in the housing. A window portion partially encloses the wheel within the wheel chamber.
