Cylinder And Piston Assemblies For Opposed Piston Engines

US Patent:
7861679, Jan 4, 2011
Filed:
Sep 21, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/586352
Inventors:
James U. Lemke - La Jolla CA, US
Ronald J. Hoffman - Scottsdale AZ, US
Michael H. Wahl - Bonita CA, US
Patrick R. Lee - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
Achates Power, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
F01P 1/04, F01P 1/06
US Classification:
123 4135, 1231934
Abstract:
In an opposed piston engine, a pair of pistons are disposed in opposition in the bore of a cylinder. The cylinder includes first liquid coolant grooves having a first cooling capacity to cool a portion of the cylinder extending from a central portion toward an exhaust port, and second liquid coolant grooves having a second cooling capacity, less than the first cooling capacity, to cool a portion of the cylinder extending from the central portion toward an inlet port. Each piston includes a cylindrical skirt with a crown and an open end opposite the crown, a piston rod with a bore, a first end attached to a back surface of the crown, and a second end extending through the open end of the skirt, a radial array of liquid coolant flow passages in communication with the bore and disposed between the first end and the back surface of the crown, and a single wristpin retained on the second end section of the piston rod and positioned externally to the piston.

Integrated Spring Head/Gimbal Assembly Holder

US Patent:
5771139, Jun 23, 1998
Filed:
Aug 3, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/511075
Inventors:
Patrick R. Lee - San Diego CA
Arthur J. Cormier - Rancho Santa Fe CA
Assignee:
Phase Metrics - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G11B 548
US Classification:
360109
Abstract:
An integrated spring head/gimbal assembly holder is used to precisely load and unload a head/gimbal assembly (HGA) of the type used in magnetic disk drives. The holder includes a fixture base by which the holder is mounted. A first boss extending from the fixture base has a surface in which a recess is formed. The recess receives a second boss on the end of the HGA so that HGA rests on the surface of the first boss. A cantilevered beam extends from the fixture base and serves as a spring which includes a clamping head. Flexure of the cantilevered beam forces the clamping head to drive the second boss firmly against the sidewalls at the edge of the recess and to force the HGA against the surface of the boss. Thus, the HGA is precisely positioned and secured to the holder.

10/395051
Inventors:
Jun Zhu - Palo Alto CA, US
Alex Moraru - Aptos CA, US
Teodor Zanetti - Sunnyvale CA, US
Franklin Tao - Union City CA, US
Dan L. Kilmer - Seiad Valley CA, US
Harald Hess - La Jolla CA, US
Tom Carr - Leucadia CA, US
Matt Bellis - Santa Rosa CA, US
Gustavo A. Pinto - Belmont CA, US
Patrick Rodney Lee - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
KLA-Tencor Technologies Corporation - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G11B021/02
US Classification:
360 75, 360 7703, 360 7811
Abstract:
A system and methods for efficiently performing media writing functions is disclosed. The system and methods include: detecting media movement with respect to a base and heads during reading and writing, and moving the heads in response; using an interferometer, such as a dual beam differential interferometer, to dynamically monitor disk position and address perceived errors; and minimizing repeatable and non repeatable runout error by writing data, such as servo bursts, in multiple revolutions to average adverse runout conditions. The present system has the ability to use an interferometer to enhance media certification and perform on line, in situ monitoring of the media, and includes shrouding, head mounting, disk biasing, and related mechanical aspects beneficial to media writing.

US Classification:
123 522, 123 51 R, 123 4181, 123 4183, 123 4184
Abstract:
Integrated, multi-cylinder opposed engine constructions include a unitary support structure to which cylinder liners are removeably mounted and sealed and on which crankshafts are rotatably supported. The unitary support structure includes cooling manifolds that provide liquid coolant to the cylinder liners. Exhaust and intake manifolds attached to the support structure to serve respective ports in the cylinder liner. The engine constructions may also include certain improvements in the construction of cooled pistons with flexible skirts, and in the construction of cylinders with sealing structures mounted outside of exhaust and inlet ports to control lubricant in the cylindrical interstice between the through bore and the pistons.

Two-Cycle, Opposed-Piston Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
8087389, Jan 3, 2012
Filed:
Jun 22, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/456735
Inventors:
James U. Lemke - La Jolla CA, US
William B. McHargue - Cardiff by the Sea CA, US
Michael H. Wahl - Bonita CA, US
Patrick R. Lee - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
Achates Power, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
F01P 3/02, F01P 3/00
US Classification:
123 4135, 123 51 BA
Abstract:
In a two-cycle, opposed-piston internal combustion engine, opposed pistons disposed in a cylinder are coupled to a pair of side-mounted crankshafts by connecting rods that are subject to substantially tensile forces acting between the pistons and the crankshafts. This geometry reduces or eliminates side forces between the pistons and the bore of the cylinder. The cylinder and the pistons are independently cooled to reduce cylindrical deformation caused by thermal expansion during engine operation.
