High-Speed, Low Temperature Sterilization And Sanitization Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
6752959, Jun 22, 2004
Filed:
Oct 5, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/970913
Inventors:
Richard T. Smith - Ridgefield CT
Parker C. Reist - Chapel Hill NC
Stephen Glahn - Burlington NC
Assignee:
PepsiCo, Inc. - Purchase NY
International Classification:
A61L 220
US Classification:
422 28, 422 1, 422298, 422302, 422303, 141 89, 141 91, 53425
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of sterilizing and/or sanitizing a container using a sterilant vapor such as hydrogen peroxide. The sterilant vapor is discharged through a nozzle positioned in an opening of the container and the container is then purged of the discharged sterilant using a heated gas such as sterile air. The nozzle is preferably positioned no closer than 15 mm from the bottom surface or any internal surface of the container and within to of the height of the container. The nozzle has a diameter no greater than one-half of the diameter of the opening of the container. When containers made of non-heat set PET are used, the temperatures of the sterilant vapor and the purge gas are preferably no greater than 160° F.

Acoustical Particle Detector And Method

US Patent:
4212190, Jul 15, 1980
Filed:
Dec 18, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/970636
Inventors:
Stephen R. Coover - Chapel Hill NC
Parker C. Reist - Chapel Hill NC
Assignee:
Research Triangle Institute - Research Triangle Park NC
International Classification:
G01N 1500
US Classification:
73 28
Abstract:
The capability for differentiating particles according to size is provided in an improved acoustical detection apparatus and method for detecting particulate matter in air or other gases. This is accomplished by controlling the flow of the gas through the capillary section of an acoustic sensor such that the flow conforms to a predetermined Reynolds number selected according to the particle size of interest. It has been found that acoustical sensors exhibit a threshold for particle size detection which varies with the Reynolds number of the flow of a gas through it. Thus, the detection of particles above a given size is achieved by controlling the flow parameters to yield a Reynolds number appropriate for detecting particles of such size.

Gas Filter Apparatus And Method Of Filtering

US Patent:
4536200, Aug 20, 1985
Filed:
Oct 3, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/538758
Inventors:
Parker C. Reist - Chapel Hill NC
International Classification:
B01D 4602, B01D 5000
US Classification:
55 96
Abstract:
A gas filter apparatus and method utilize cylindrical pleated paper filters arranged to collect particulates on the interior of the filters from scavenging gas flowed through the filters. The particulates are removed by applying a high pressure gas pulse to an air chamber in a cylindrical housing surrounding each filter in spaced relation which forces the removed particulates axially through an open end of the filter.
