Abstract:

A passenger conveyance vehicle loading and unloading ramp has one end pivotally supported adjacent a terminal building and the other end supported for movement into and away from a loading position at a vehicle door includes an enlarged generally cylindrical head mounted adjacent the outer end of the ramp for limited pivotal movement about a horizontal axis extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the ramp, and a cab or vestibule mounted on the enlarged head for movement therewith and for pivotal movement about a generaly vertical axis for contact with the vehicle throughout a wide range of angles between the longitudinal axes of the ramp and of the conveyance vehicle. The vestibule is supported entirely from its bottom portion whereby the vestibule structure may be relatively lightweight since only minimal loads will have to be transferred between the top and bottom of the vestibule structure.

Abstract:

Conveyance loading ramp has its inner end pivotally supported adjacent a building structure and the other end mounted on a mobile undercarriage having a pair of ground engaging wheels mounted one on each side of the ramp for rotation about a common horizontal axis. The undercarriage is supported for pivotal movement about a vertical axis for steering and an improved hydraulic driving and steering system includes separate hydraulic motor connected in series to drive the wheels. A first reversible variable flow control valve connected in the hydraulic circuit is operable to control both the rate and direction of flow of hydraulic fluid to the series connected motors and a second reversible variable flow valve connected in the circuit between the first valve and the hydraulic motors is operable to bypass one only of the hydraulic motors with a portion of hydraulic fluid from the first valve whereby the series connected hydraulic motors can be driven at different rates to steer the outer end of the ramp during expansion and retraction movement. A single manually actuated control connected to the first and second valves simultaneously controls both steering of the undercarriage and the direction and rate of movement of the drive motors.

Abstract:

An improved driving control and wheel position indicator for an extendible and retractable passenger conveyance loading ramp of the type having one end mounted for pivotal movement about a vertical axis and the other end supported on an undercarriage having steerable, driven ground engaging wheels controlled from an operator's station in a vestibule mounted for pivotal movement about a vertical axis on the movable end of the ramp. The system includes a wheel position indicator connected between the undercarriage and the movable vestibule including means for detecting the steered position of the ground engaging wheels and a visual display at the operator's station responsive to the wheel position detecting means for continuously indicating the true bearing of the ground engaging wheels regardless of the rotative position of the vestibule about its vertical pivot axis.
