Total Artificial Heart System For Auto-Regulating Flow And Pressure Balance

Total Artificial Heart System For Auto-Regulating Flow And Pressure Balance

US Patent:
2007008, Apr 12, 2007
Filed:
Oct 6, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/244836
Inventors:
Oscar Frazier - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Alpha Dev, LLC. - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61N 1/362
US Classification:
600016000
Abstract:
The present invention provides a total artificial heart system for auto-regulating flow and pressure balance. In one embodiment the system comprises an atrial reservoir comprising inlets and outlets connectable to a mammalian cardiovascular system and at least first and second continuous pumps connected to the atrial reservoir. In further embodiments, the system comprises an atrial reservoir comprising at least two atrial chambers, and a means for transmitting fluid pressure between the atrial chambers. The means for transmitting fluid pressure include, but are not limited to a diaphragm, an interatrial window, a flexible membrane, a valve, a filter, or combinations thereof. In another embodiment, the means for transmitting fluid pressure comprises an implantable diaphragm comprising an outer rim attachable to biological tissue and a membrane anchored at its periphery by said outer rim.

Total Artificial Heart System For Auto-Regulating Flow And Pressure

US Patent:
8226712, Jul 24, 2012
Filed:
Jun 15, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/485015
Inventors:
Oscar H. Frazier - Houston TX, US
William E. Cohn - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Newheart Medical Devices LLC - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61M 1/12
US Classification:
623 313
Abstract:
The present invention is TAH system for auto-regulating blood flow and maintaining the asymmetric pressure balance in the mammalian cardiovascular system by decreasing the resistance in blood flow and minimizing the pressure gradients to exploit the in-flow pressure sensitivities of continuous flow pumps. The system further includes laminar flow generating manifolds connected to the atrium at one end and attached to pumps linked to the great vessels at the other, such that the in-let flow sensitivities of the pumps are maximized to auto-regulate blood flow, providing adequate pulmonary and systemic arterial flow to support normal metabolism and end-organ function and maintain the appropriate asymmetric physiologic pressure balance between the systemic and pulmonary systems of the mammalian cardiovascular system.

Intraatrial Ventricular Assist Device

Intraatrial Ventricular Assist Device

US Patent:
2009008, Apr 2, 2009
Filed:
Oct 1, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/243256
Inventors:
Oscar H. Frazier - Houston TX, US
William E. Cohn - Bellaire TX, US
Assignee:
ALPHA DEV LLC - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61M 1/12
US Classification:
600 16
Abstract:
A medical device comprises a pump adapted to fit within an atrium of a heart, said pump comprising an inlet and an outlet. The device further comprises a flexible outflow conduit coupled to said outlet. A method of assisting ventricular function of a heart of a patient comprises: a) inserting a continuous flow pump having an inlet and an outlet into the heart via a subclavian or jugular vein; b) attaching the outlet of the continuous flow pump to an atrial septum, wherein the inlet of the continuous flow pump is directed into a heart atrium; c) attaching the distal end of the outflow conduit to an artery; and d) operating the pump at a volumetric rate ranging from about 2 L/min to about 3 L/min.
