The distal tips of the line of the assembled line/element () are then inserted via the interior into holes in the side wall of a rotatable head, either that provided to house a spool () of filament line that has been removed (FIGS. A & B, and ) or that of an attachment (FIGS. A-D). When the powered, trimming device is rotated, the newly inserted line, held in place by the button-like locking element, then does the cutting and trimming of weeds and the like or even sweeping.

Powered, Ground Care, Tool System

US Patent:
2003014, Jul 31, 2003
Filed:
Jul 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/909032
Inventors:
Orlando Jerez - Kenner LA, US
International Classification:
B26B007/00
US Classification:
030/276000
Abstract:
Implements for attaching to a hand-held, powered device (e.g., “Weed-Eater” type with extended handle or hand tool) to perform various work or chores (filament cutting, blade cutting, brushing, blowing, mixing, etc.). After disconnecting the device's original implement, an initial, cultivator/cutter implement (), cylindrical in shape with a substantially solid, circular top () and a relatively thin, continuous wall of constant thickness, is attached by an appropriate threaded member (e.g. a nut or bolt, usually with one or more washers) to the bottom end of the powered device (FIGS. A-D, ) through a central opening (). The cultivator's top can include a series of circumferentially spaced, “snap-in” openings (e.g. two or more) through and into which other implements (e.g. those of FIGS. -) can be attached (FIGS. A & B) with the use of a like number of upwardly extending, “snap” legs (& ), the adapter then functioning as a “universal” adapter for changing in and out various work implements as desired by the user, with a quick and easy removal and addition of an implement with “snap-out”/“snap-in,” twist actions. The cultivator/adaptor also includes a series of circumferentially spaced, inwardly offset protrusions () extending down from the circular side wall bottom (), which protrusions dig into and cultivate the ground, removing undesirable vegetation when rotated by the powered device. Side hole sets (17/317) are provided for adding cutting filament sections () for supplemental or alternative filament cutting of the “Weed-Eater” type. A protective bottom plate member is also disclosed (FIG. ).

Convertible, User-Supported, Garden Cleaning Implement For Cutting/Macerating Weeds And Like

US Patent:
5651418, Jul 29, 1997
Filed:
Apr 17, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/423546
Inventors:
Orlando Jerez - Kenner LA
International Classification:
A01B 3300
US Classification:
172 14
Abstract:
A garden cleaning implement (10/10A) for weeds and the like comprising a cutting mechanism (14) and an adjustable guard mechanism (28) carried on, for example, an extended pole handle (22/122). The cutting mechanism includes an associated spool line shroud (16); an intermediate, rotatable shaft (18); and a rotatable, blade, cutting member (20/120/220). The guard mechanism includes a ring-shaped guard providing a protected area of a size sufficient to cover and protectively encircle over the rotating blade member; and slotted, attachment legs (32) for adjustably attaching the cutting mechanism and handle to the ring guard structure. The relatively rigid, cutting blade member is located under the adjustable, protective guard ring, allowing for protective cutting of, for example, weeds immediately adjacent to, for example, desirable vegetation. The implement is easily and quickly converted for cutting use, not only with a relatively rigid cutting blade member but also with supplemental, flexible cutting line(s), for trimming the undesirable vegetation, as well as easily and quickly converted between a straight, angled, handle version (FIGS. 5 & 6) to a bent handle version (FIGS.

Garden Cleaning Implement For Cutting/Macerating Weeds Above And Below Ground

US Patent:
5491963, Feb 20, 1996
Filed:
Aug 11, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/288959
Inventors:
Orlando Jerez - Kenner LA
International Classification:
A01D 3468, A01B 106, A01B 3908, A01B 3918
US Classification:
56 171
Abstract:
A garden cleaning implement (10) for weeds and the like comprising a cutting mechanism (14) and a retractable guard mechanism (28), generally free to "float" up and down about the cutter mechanism, carried on, for example, an extended pole handle (22). The cutting mechanism includes--an associated rotational power source (16/116); an intermediate, rotatable shaft (18) connected thereto; and a rotatable, rectangular blade, cutting member (20). The guard mechanism includes--a cylindrically-shaped, retractable housing (28) providing an enclosing cavity of a size sufficient to receive therein and protectively cover over the rotating cutting member; and a guide means (32) for guiding the retraction of the retractable housing along a path substantially parallel to the rotatable shaft's longitudinal axis between first, lower and second, upper positions, in which the rotatable cutting member is disposed within the enclosing cavity, and in which the rotatable cutting member is below and outside of the enclosing cavity, respectively. When the cutter mechanism is above ground level, the guard mechanism is in its down, cutter covering position under the force of gravity or biasing springs (68), protecting the user and any surrounding desirable vegetation (V) from the cutter; but, when the cutter mechanism is lowered down into the ground to macerate the weed roots and till the ground (G) around the roots, the guard mechanism is raised up by the ground contact of its lower periphery on the ground, allowing the cutter mechanism to easily go down into the soil outside of the protective enclosure as the guard moves up.
