US Patent:
2007023, Oct 11, 2007
Filed:
Jan 16, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/623705
Inventors:
Michael Lau - Edmonds WA, US
Shahram Vaezy - Seattle WA, US
Alexander Lebedev - Seattle WA, US
Michael J. Connolly - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Mirabilis Medica, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
A61H 1/00, A61B 8/00
US Classification:
600439, 601 2
Abstract:
An apparatus for delivering HIFU energy may include a probe with a plurality of leaves that provide a bowl-shaped HIFU therapy transducer. In once case, pins may slide within grooves in the leaves to deploy the leaves. In another case, spines may be configured to slide in a channel defined in each leaf. In other cases, a spring or a shape memory alloy may be used to deploy the leaves. In another implementation, a probe may be fitted with a flexible material that couples the HIFU therapy transducer to the probe and allows the transducer to be drawn to the side of the probe for insertion. In another implementation, a probe may have one or more inflatable bladders that form the HIFU therapy transducer. In yet another implementation, a probe may have an imaging component and a HIFU therapy transducer disposed thereon that rotate, as a unit, about a hinge.

Abstract:
A system and method for providing real-time, image-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) targeting and treatment of tissue. In one embodiment, the system includes an HIFU applicator and a user interface with a touchscreen display for three-dimensional visualization of the tissue. Image frames displayed on the user interface depict real-time images of the tissue, including an image parallel to a feature of the applicator and an image orthogonal to the parallel image. Reference lines may be sketched using the touchscreen and displayed on the image frames. In one embodiment, tissue boundaries are detected and marked on the image frames, either by the user or automatically by the system. In another embodiment, the user interface includes a footswitch for the user to interact with the system. In another embodiment, the system includes an ultrasound imaging component configured to undock from the system for use as a stand-alone ultrasound imaging device.

Methods And Apparatus For The Treatment Of Menometrorrhagia, Endometrial Pathology, And Cervical Neoplasia Using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Energy

US Patent:
8277379, Oct 2, 2012
Filed:
Apr 13, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/735279
Inventors:
Michael P. H. Lau - Edmonds WA, US
Nelson Teng - Palo Alto CA, US
Shahram Vaezy - Seattle WA, US
Alexander Lebedev - Seattle WA, US
Michael William Lau - Edmonds WA, US
Michael J. Connolly - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Mirabilis Medica Inc. - Bothell WA
International Classification:
A61B 8/00
US Classification:
600439, 601 2, 600459
Abstract:
A probe having a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transducer is positioned in a female patient. The HIFU transducer is deployed within the vagina of the patient outside of the cervix and uterine cavity and is configured to direct HIFU energy to a treatment site within the uterus of the patient. An imaging component positioned relative to the patient images a portion of the patient's uterus that includes the treatment site to help guide the delivery of the HIFU energy to the treatment site. A liquid medium may be infused into the uterine cavity of the patient where it is maintained during imaging and delivery of the HIFU therapy. The HIFU transducer produces a thermal heating of tissue at a focus within the treatment site to initiate necrosis of the tissue. The location of the focus is controlled in accordance with an image obtained by the imaging component.

Ultrasound Based Cosmetic Therapy Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
2009031, Dec 24, 2009
Filed:
Jun 18, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/487538
Inventors:
Justin Reed - Seattle WA, US
Alexander Lebedev - Seattle WA, US
Michael Lau - Edmonds WA, US
George Barrett - Redmond WA, US
Irena Lebedev - Upland CA, US
Assignee:
JeNu Biosciences, Inc. - Bothell WA
International Classification:
A61M 37/00, A61H 1/00, A61N 7/00
US Classification:
604 22, 601 2
Abstract:
A waveguide couples an acoustic source (such as an ultrasound transducer) to a custom cosmetic product (e.g., a liquid or gel-based skin care product) applied to the skin. In one exemplary embodiment, a distal surface of the waveguide is placed in contact with a relatively thin layer of skin care product that has been applied to the skin. Alternatively, the thin layer can be applied to the distal face of the waveguide, and then the waveguide placed on the skin. The custom cosmetic product has been formulated such that when ultrasound energy is directed into the custom cosmetic product via the waveguide, bubbles included or formed in the custom cosmetic product oscillate, and increase the permeability of the skin to active beneficial agents included in the custom cosmetic product.

Methods And Apparatuses For Contouring Tissue By Selective Application Of Energy

US Patent:
2008012, May 29, 2008
Filed:
Nov 27, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/945791
Inventors:
Michael Lau - Edmonds WA, US
Leonard F. Pease - Richland WA, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/00
US Classification:
606 41, 606 27
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses for contouring, shaping and/or directionally shrinking tissue by selective application of energy are disclosed herein. One embodiment of a method of contouring tissue includes determining a contraction direction along which the tissue is to be preferentially contracted and applying energy to a plurality of discrete elongated exposed regions of tissue spaced apart from each other among non-exposed regions of tissue. At least one of the exposed regions can be oriented such that a longitudinal dimension of the exposed regions is generally transverse to the contraction direction.
